The stabilizing effect of collision‐induced velocity shear on the ionospheric feedback instability in Earth's magnetosphere

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2017
The feedback instability in the ionospheric Alfvén resonator in Earth's magnetosphere is examined using a two‐dimensional multifluid numerical model of coupled ionosphere and magnetosphere.

Cross‐Correlations of Solar Wind Parameters Using Monitoring Spacecraft

open access: yesSpace Weather, Volume 24, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Space weather predictive modeling currently utilizes real‐time data from the spacecraft ACE and DSCOVR, with SOLAR‐1 and IMAP recently online. This study assesses whether DSCOVR solar wind plasma and interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) data exhibit large‐scale discrepancies from the corresponding ACE data, and if so, whether these ...

Coordinated interhemispheric SuperDARN radar observations of the ionospheric response to flux transfer events observed by the cluster spacecraft at the high-latitude magnetopause [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
International audienceAt 10:00 UT on 14 February 2001, the quartet of ESA Cluster spacecraft were approaching the Northern Hemisphere high-latitude magnetopause in the post-noon sector on an outbound trajectory.

The High‐Latitude Workbox for the Ionosphere (HAWK‐I): A New Toolkit for Real‐Time Specification of the Arctic Ionosphere

open access: yesSpace Weather, Volume 24, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract The high‐latitude ionosphere exhibits rapid spatial and temporal variability during geomagnetically active periods, creating persistent challenges for accurate nowcasts. The High‐latitude Workbox for the Ionosphere (HAWK‐I) is a real‐time ionosphere nowcast and specification system designed for operational deployment to address these ...

First simultaneous observations of flux transfer events at the high-latitude magnetopause by the cluster spacecraft and pulsed radar signatures in the conjugate ionosphere by the CUTLASS and EISCAT radars [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Cluster magnetic field data are studied during an outbound pass through the post-noon high-latitude magnetopause region on 14 February 2001. The onset of several minute perturbations in the magnetospheric field was observed in conjunction with a ...

Benchmarking Deep Learning Models for Real‐Time Prediction of Post‐Peak Solar Flare Irradiance Using FISM2 Data

open access: yesSpace Weather, Volume 24, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract This study presents a deep learning framework for real‐time prediction of post‐peak solar flare irradiance. The model targets the soft X‐ray band (0.1–0.8 nm) and three extreme ultraviolet (EUV) wavelength bands (9.0–9.9 nm, 13.0–13.9 nm, and 30.0–30.9 nm), and produces forecasts at 1‐min cadence for 3 hr after the flare peak.

April 2000 geomagnetic storm: Ionospheric drivers of large geomagnetically induced currents [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
International audienceGeomagnetically induced currents (GIC) flowing in technological systems on the ground are a direct manifestation of space weather. Due to the proximity of very dynamic ionospheric current systems, GIC are of special interest at high

The Ionosphere as an Operational Constraint on Space‐Based Solar Power

open access: yesSpace Weather, Volume 24, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract This commentary argues that there is an urgent need to develop a scientific consensus on how microwave beams from space‐based solar power (SBSP) satellites will interact with plasma in the ionosphere. Whilst the SBSP concept dates back to the 1970s, it is now gaining traction around the world as a technology that could contribute baseline ...

Transient plasma injections in the dayside magnetosphere: One-to-one correlated observations by cluster and by SuperDARN [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Conjunctions in the cusp between the four Cluster spacecraft and SuperDARN ground-based radars offer unique opportunities to compare the signatures of transient plasma injections simultaneously in the high-altitude dayside magnetosphere and in the ...
