Correlation of High‐Latitude Scintillation With Auroral Precipitation: Case Studies Using GNSS Radio Occultation Data From PlanetiQ

open access: yesSpace Weather, Volume 24, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract This study presents a survey of high‐latitude ionospheric scintillation using GNSS radio occultation (RO) data from the PlanetiQ satellite. The analysis examines 483 high‐latitude RO tracks between January and May 2023, with 371 tracks exhibiting scintillation events.

Morphological Features of Severe Ionospheric Weather Associated with Typhoon Doksuri in 2023

open access: yesRemote Sensing
The atmospheric gravity waves (AGWs) generated by severe typhoons can facilitate the transfer of energy from the troposphere to the ionosphere, resulting in medium-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances (MSTIDs).

Assimilative Modeling of Ionospheric Disturbances with FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC and Ground-Based GPS Measurements

open access: yesTerrestrial, Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, 2009
The four-dimensional Global Assimilative Ionospheric Model (GAIM) is applied to a study of ionospheric disturbances. The investigation is focused on disturbance features, particularly in the altitude and latitude dimensions, at low latitudes during a ...

On the Origin of Summer Sporadic E Periodicities at Midlatitudes

open access: yesSpace Weather, Volume 24, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Summertime midlatitude sporadic E (Es) layers exhibit daily periodicities whose underlying physical causes remain to be fully identified. We investigate the origin of these periodicities by analyzing an 11‐year data set (2007–2017) comprising ionosonde measurements, FORMOSAT‐3/COSMIC radio occultation (RO) observations, and WACCM‐X neutral ...

Numerical modeling of spatial perturbations of the ionosphere from local tropospheric sources

open access: yesSolar-Terrestrial Physics
The paper presents the results of modeling of spatial and temporal perturbations of the thermosphere during a strong meteorological disturbance. The modeling was performed using the Global Self-Consistent Model of the thermosphere, ionosphere, and ...

Validation of Global Ionospheric Specification (GIS) Electron Density Measurements During Solar Minimum to Solar Maximum Under Quiet and Disturbed Geomagnetic Conditions

open access: yesSpace Weather, Volume 24, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Global Ionospheric Specification (GIS) three‐dimensional electron density profiles constructed by assimilating the line‐of‐sight total electron content (TEC) from global navigation satellite system (GNSS) radio occultation (RO) measurements by FORMOSAT‐7/COSMIC‐2 (F7/C2) and ground‐based receiver network from international GNSS service ...

Global Circulation of Martian Ionospheric Currents Revealed by Magnetometer Data

open access: yesAGU Advances, Volume 7, Issue 6, September 2026.
Abstract In the dynamo region of the Martian ionosphere, a large‐scale current is generated by charge separation: ions collide with neutrals while electrons preferentially gyrate around local magnetic field lines. Using MAVEN magnetometer data and a physics‐informed neural network constrained by Ampère's law and Gauss's law for magnetism (the Neural ...

Statistical Scale Analyses of a Diurnal Periodicity in Auroral Kilometric Radiation, Observed by Wind/WAVES

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, Volume 131, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract The Earth's strongest natural radio emission is Auroral Kilometric Radiation (AKR), which is correlated with auroral intensity, and is a barometer for space weather. AKR is generated by the electron cyclotron maser instability, with sources on auroral field lines. Previous work on AKR and radio emissions from other planets (or stars) points to

Impacts of Neutral Wind‐Driven Currents on Geomagnetic Disturbances and Magnetospheric Dynamics During the May 2024 Storm

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, Volume 131, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract The neutral wind dynamo generates ionospheric currents that can significantly affect high‐latitude electrodynamics during geomagnetic storms, yet its role in global magnetosphere‐ionosphere coupling is often underrepresented. We quantify the impact of wind‐driven currents on geomagnetic disturbances (GMDs) and magnetospheric dynamics during ...
