Pertactin deficiency of Bordetella pertussis: Insights into epidemiology, and perspectives on surveillance and public health impact

open access: yesHuman Vaccines & Immunotherapeutics
Pertussis resurgence has been documented even in countries with high pediatric vaccine coverage. The proportion of Bordetella pertussis isolates not expressing pertactin (PRN) has increased in several countries where acellular pertussis (aP) vaccines are

Vaccine Adjuvants in the Immunocompromised Host: Science, Safety, and Efficacy

open access: yesTransplant Infectious Disease, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Vaccine adjuvants are essential for enhancing immune responses to vaccines, particularly in immunocompromised populations who typically demonstrate suboptimal responses to standard vaccination. This narrative review evaluates the safety and efficacy of approved and candidate adjuvants in immunocompromised hosts, with emphasis on solid organ ...

Epidemiological and clinical profile of viral respiratory infections in children under 5 years at pre‐ and post‐COVID‐19 era in Praia, Cabo Verde

open access: yesTropical Medicine &International Health, EarlyView.
Abstract Background The coronavirus disease‐19 (COVID‐19) pandemic has affected global health, influencing the prevalence of different respiratory pathogens. The aim of this study is to evaluate the distribution of agents causing acute respiratory infections in children under 5 years old before and after the COVID‐19 pandemic in Praia, Cabo Verde, and ...

Vaccination dilemma on an evolving social network [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
Vaccination is crucial for the control of epidemics. Yet it is a social dilemma since non-vaccinators can benefit from the herd immunity created by the vaccinators. Thus the optimum vaccination level is not reached via voluntary vaccination at times.

Do Childhood Vaccines Have Non-Specific Effects on Mortality [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
A recent article by Kristensen et al. suggested that measles vaccine and bacille Calmette–Guérin (BCG) vaccine might\ud reduce mortality beyond what is expected simply from protection against measles and tuberculosis.

Respiratory syncytial virus preventives for children in Australia: current landscape and future directions

open access: yesMedical Journal of Australia, EarlyView.
Summary Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a major cause of acute lower respiratory tract infections, and a leading cause of hospitalisation in children under 6 months of age. Previously, palivizumab, a costly, short‐acting monoclonal antibody, was the primary preventive option.

Pertussis vaccine performance in an epidemic year-Oregon, 2012.

open access: yesClinical Infectious Diseases, 2014
A 2012 pertussis epidemic in Oregon afforded an opportunity to measure vaccine effectiveness; it ranged from 95% (95% confidence interval [CI], 92%-97%) among children 15-47 months of age to 47% (95% CI, 19%-65%) among adolescents 13-16 years of age.

Long Covid Symptom Clusters, Correlates and Predictors in a Highly Vaccinated Australian Population in 2023

open access: yesHealth Expectations, Volume 28, Issue 3, June 2025.
ABSTRACT Background Limited data exists regarding long Covid burden following Omicron infection in highly vaccinated populations. Objective To (1) characterise long Covid prevalence and predictors and (2) identify key symptom clusters and their correlates among long Covid patients, during an Omicron‐predominant period in a highly vaccinated population.
