Pediatric Neurology, 1988Pertussis is a serious respiratory disease in infants. Immunization prevents infection in some; in others it permits infection but prevents disease. Epidemics occur when immunization rates fall. Whole-cell vaccine has proved to be a safe and effective method of disease control.

Sir .—I was delighted to read your comments 1 on pertussis vaccine in reply to Dr Stewart's letters. 2 I agree that pertussis vaccination does reduce the incidence and severity of pertussis. As administration of pertussis vaccine is not without risks, extreme caution must be taken in patients who are at high risk.
