Estimated total abundance and numbers at age of longtail hake (Macruronus magellanicus) in the Southwest Atlantic during the years 1987-2000

open access: yesScientia Marina, 2002
Delta-based estimates of longtail hake biomass off Argentina were derived from the results of summer trawl surveys carried out on an irregular basis since 1987.

Reconsidering the role of introduced species in the climate‐affected and highly invaded eastern Mediterranean

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Bioinvasions are considered mostly as a biodiversity and conservation hazard, but in specific situations, introduced species can bring ecological or socioeconomic benefits. We assessed the social–ecological role of marine introduced species in the eastern Mediterranean Sea—a global hotspot of bioinvasions and extirpations—and their potential ...

Comparative review of entanglement risk assessments for cetacean conservation and management

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Cetacean entanglement in fishing gear remains a major global threat that exposes persistent gaps in how fisheries management frameworks manage risk to nontarget species. Ecological risk assessment (ERA) offers a structured way to link exposure and consequences to an explicit statement of risk, but entanglement risk assessments vary widely in ...

Seasonal variations in the growth of anchovy larvae (Engraulis anchoita) on the Argentine coastal shelf

open access: yesScientia Marina, 2010
Age and growth rates of the anchovy larvae (Engraulis anchoita) in Argentine waters were estimated by analysing daily growth increments in sagittal otoliths under light microscope.

Exploring natural sunscreens: UVB protection and antioxidant properties in gadusol‐rich fish roes extracts

open access: yesPhotochemistry and Photobiology, EarlyView.
Gadusol‐rich extracts provide effective UVB protection and antioxidant activity in HaCaT cells and C. elegans, highlighting their potential as natural photochemoprotective agents for pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications. It also demonstrates remarkable in vitro antioxidant capacity and thermal stability over time.

Photoprotective potential of gadusol against ultraviolet B radiation in melanocytes

open access: yesPhotochemistry and Photobiology, EarlyView.
Gadusol protects melanocytes from ultraviolet B (UVB)‐induced damage without cytotoxicity. Abstract The increasing incidence of skin cancer, including melanoma, combined with the need for ultraviolet (UV) filters that are safe for human health and marine ecosystems, is driving the search for new photoprotective agents.

Bomb Radiocarbon, Otolith Daily Increments and Length Modes Validate Age Interpretations of Chilean Jack Mackerel (Trachurus murphyi)

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2022
Ages of Chilean jack mackerel (Trachurus murphyi) in the southern Pacific Ocean were validated using three methods: 1) daily microincrement readings in sagittal otoliths of young-of-the year (YOY) fish to validate the first annulus; 2) modal progression ...
