New genes for pest control

1999
The feasibility of using genetically modified plants for insect control has been clearly demonstrated by expressing the Bacillus thuringensis (Bt) toxins or the protease inhibitor genes. These compounds have been proved to control several insect pests in different crops.

Pest Control: Biopesticides' Potential

Science, 2013
The special section on Smarter Pest Control (16 August, p. 728) highlighted the threats that chemical pesticides pose to human health and the environment, and some of the smart alternatives, including genetically modifi ed (GM) crops. However, an important and emerging technology against insect pests was overlooked: biological pesticides.

Control of a Pest Population

Biometrics, 1970
Consider a population of individuals in some habitat. When the existence of this population in the habitat is damaging in some sense, one is faced with the problem of controlling the growth of the population within that habitat. Such control action involves cost due to labour, materials, risk, etc. and it is therefore necessary to weigh the damage done

Allelopathy for Pest Control

2013
Plants are attacked by a plethora of pathogens or pests. Pest attack in turn induces or enhances the synthesis of a many chemical ‘weapons’ produced by plant defenses. These chemicals are classified broadly into nitrogen compounds, terpenoids and phenolics. They have a broad range of antifungal, antimicrobial and pesticidal activities.

Pesticides and Pest Control

2009
About 3 billion tons of pesticides are applied each year in the world. However, despite this large amount of pesticide applied worldwide, pests, insects, weeds and plant pathogens destroy about 40° of all crops.
