In parathyroid disease, classical scintigraphic techniques remain the first choice for localizing hyperfunctional parathyroid glands in primary known hyperparathyroidism and in case of secondary, tertiary, and recurrent hyperparathyroidism. When classical scintigraphic techniques are not diagnostic, however, (11)C-methionine seems to offer a good ...

Quantification provides the link between the concentrations of radioactivity measured in tissue and the underlying physiologic processes occurring in the organ. It relates the rate at which radioactivity levels in the body change over time to quantitative parameters such as absolute rate glucose metabolism, regional blood flow, or concentrations of ...

Positron emission tomography (PET) is a procedure in nuclear medicine, which is applied predominantly in oncological diagnostics. In the form of modern hybrid machines, such as PET computed tomography (PET/CT) and PET magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MRI) it has found wide acceptance and availability.

[18F]Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG PET) can be used to visualize large‐vessel inflammation in giant‐cell arteritis, Takayasu arteritis, and other types of aortitis. In patients with symptoms compatible with polymyalgia rheumatica, findings of increased FDG‐uptake in the shoulders, hips, as well as the spinous processes of the ...
