Evaluation of patient doses for routine digital radiography procedures toward establishing an institutional diagnostic reference levels: A case study in Sri Lanka

open access: yesJournal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics, Volume 23, Issue 12, December 2022., 2022
Abstract The present study was conducted as part of a comprehensive work to establish National Diagnostic Reference Levels (NDRLs) in Sri Lanka for the first time. DRLs can be used as an effective optimization tool for identifying unusually high or low patient doses during X‐ray examinations.

On gray-box modeling for virtual flow metering [PDF]

open access: yesControl Engineering Practice, volume 118, 2022, 2021
A virtual flow meter (VFM) enables continuous prediction of flow rates in petroleum production systems. The predicted flow rates may aid the daily control and optimization of a petroleum asset. Gray-box modeling is an approach that combines mechanistic and data-driven modeling.

On the Determination of the Solar Rotation Elements i, Ω and Period using Sunspot Observations by Ruđer Bošković in 1777 [PDF]

open access: yesThe Mining-Geology-Petroleum Engineering Bulletin, 2021, 36, 3, pp. 77-98, 2022
In September 1777, Ru{\dj}er Bo\v{s}kovi\'c observed sunspots for six days. Based on these measurements, he used his own methods to calculate the elements of the solar rotation, the longitude of the node, the inclination of the solar equator and the period.

Investigation of the Uniformity of Gel Shrinkage by Imaging Tracer Particles Using X‐Ray Microtomography

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView., 2023
A novel method for tracking structural changes in gels using widely accessible microcomputed tomography is presented and validated for various hydro‐, alco‐, and aerogels. The core idea of the method is to track positions of micrometer‐sized tracer particles entrapped in the gel and relate them to the density of the gel network.

Modeling pressure pulsation and backflow in progressing cavity pumps with deformable stator [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Petroleum Science and Engineering (2021), 203, 108402, 2021
This contribution studies the impact of the rotor-stator interaction in a single-stage progressing cavity pump on the flow rate and pressure. Specifically, we investigate the effect of the rotor movement on the sealings formed with deformable stators for various speeds and pressures. Sealings are reconstructed with the help of a geometric 3D model.

Making the black-box brighter: interpreting machine learning algorithm for forecasting drilling accidents [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Petroleum Science and Engineering, 2022, 111041, ISSN 0920-4105, 2022
We present an approach for interpreting a black-box alarming system for forecasting accidents and anomalies during the drilling of oil and gas wells. The interpretation methodology aims to explain the local behavior of the accident predictive model to drilling engineers.

Multi-task learning for virtual flow metering [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Virtual flow metering (VFM) is a cost-effective and non-intrusive technology for inferring multiphase flow rates in petroleum assets. Inferences about flow rates are fundamental to decision support systems that operators extensively rely on. Data-driven VFM, where mechanistic models are replaced with machine learning models, has recently gained ...

A Comparative Study for the Effect of Some Petroleum Products on the Engineering Properties of Gypseous Soils

open access: yesTikrit Journal of Engineering Sciences, 2022
Gypseous soils are considered problematic soils because the soil cavities happen during receiving the water or this type of soil and solving gypsum materials and contract in a soil volume.
