The urogenital papilla in the Holarctic lamprey (Petromyzontidae)
Environmental Biology of Fishes, 1988The urogenital papillae of 30 species of Holarctic lampreys were examined to determine if this structure has any taxonomic use. Total length, branchial length and papilla length were measured. A correlation between mean papilla length and mean total length of the species existed in males for parasitic species but not nonparasitic species, indicating a ...

The gular pouch in northern hemisphere parasitic lampreys (Petromyzontidae)
Canadian Journal of Zoology, 2005The gular pouch is a large structure, of unknown function, that is present in sexually mature males of two parasitic species of southern-hemisphere lampreys. Our study showed the presence of a similar structure, of much smaller size, in both spawning and prespawning males and females in seven parasitic species of northern-hemisphere lampreys. Homology

First Report of a Mitochondrial Pseudogene in Agnathan Vertebrates (Cyclostomata: Petromyzontidae)
Journal of Molecular Evolution, 2018We report herein the characterization of a nuclear paralog of a fragment of the mitochondrial genome (a numt) in two closely related species of lampreys (Ichthyomyzon spp.). Although numts have been characterized in several vertebrate taxa, numts have yet to be reported for fishes in general.

Identification of lamprey larvae of the genus Ichthyomyzon (Petromyzontidae)
Environmental Biology of Fishes, 1988This study deals with the taxonomy of ammocoetes of the North American lamprey genus Ichthyomyzon. The characters most useful to identify them are the pigmentation patterns on the caudal fin and the different areas of the head, as well as the number of myomeres. These characters serve as the basis for a taxonomic key to ammocoetes 56 mm in total length

Mitochondrial DNA, 2013
The complete mitochondrial genome was sequenced from the river lamprey, Lampetra reissneri. The genome sequence was 16,197 bp in size, and the gene order and contents were identical to those of the congeneric species Lampetra japonica. However, L. reissneri had two incomplete control regions with a rearrangement of mitochondrial genomic organization ...

Eudontomyzon graecus, sp. n., a nonparasitic lamprey from Greece, is restricted to the Loúros River drainage, Ionian Sea basin, Epirus Periphery. It is distinguished from Eudontomyzon hellenicus, the other nonparasitic Greek brook lamprey, occurring allopatrically in the Strymon River drainage, Aegean Sea basin, Central Macedonia Periphery, by ...
