Type and developmental timing of childhood adversity predicts psychopathology symptoms in a South African birth cohort

open access: yesJournal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, Volume 67, Issue 9, Page 1547-1561, September 2026.
Background Childhood adversity is widespread globally and is one of the strongest predictors of later psychopathology. However, the differential effects of type and timing of childhood adversities on childhood psychopathology remain unclear, highlighting the need to explore which life‐course hypotheses (sensitive periods, accumulation of exposure, and ...

Prosociality: Against Consequentialism and Towards Relationality

open access: yesJournal for the Theory of Social Behaviour, Volume 56, Issue 3, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Prosocial behaviour is a topic of concern within sociology and the social sciences more broadly. Though defined in various ways, the dominant theme of existing definitions of prosociality centres the causal power of an act in producing real or intended benefits for some other agents, at a cost to the agent that performed the act.

Institutions for Autonomy: Facilitating Moral Selfhood by Design

open access: yesJournal for the Theory of Social Behaviour, Volume 56, Issue 3, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Modern institutions can be seen as ‘regimes of autonomy’, social contexts in which different criteria for autonomy are maintained. Some of these institutions provide individuals the opportunity to nurture their moral selfhood as they allow persons to learn the capacity for giving legitimate justifications for their decisions.

Taking Risks, With and Without Probabilities

open access: yesNoûs, Volume 60, Issue 3, Page 576-592, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Some hold that expected utility is too restrictive in the way it handles risk. Risk‐weighted expected utility is an alternative that allows decision‐makers to have a range of attitudes toward probabilistic risk. It holds that any attitude within this range is instrumentally rational, since these attitudes represent different, equally good ...

Living in the Pyrocene: Assemblage‐Wide Terrestrial Vertebrate Responses to Mega‐Fires in the Pantanal Wetlands

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 8, August 2026.
More than 60% of Serra do Amolar within the Pantanal Wetlands, Brazil, was burned in 2020. Nine vertebrate species showed a dependency on forest areas, which are more vulnerable to fires in this region, despite the fire not having shown a direct effect on the occupation.

Preliminary Validation of a Novel Genetic Knowledge Scale for Familial Hypercholesterolemia: Evaluation of Face Validity and Core Concepts

open access: yesJournal of Genetic Counseling, Volume 35, Issue 4, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Facilitating patient‐informed decision making is central to the genetic counseling practice. The Multidimensional Model of Informed Choice (MMIC) evaluates informed decisions in genetic testing, but validated MMIC measures for inherited cardiac conditions are lacking.

Surrogate‐Assisted Bayesian Inference of Fracture Network Parameters From Elastic Waves: A Sensitivity‐Guided Approach

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Machine Learning and Computation, Volume 3, Issue 4, August 2026.
Abstract We develop a sensitivity‐guided, surrogate‐assisted Bayesian framework to infer fracture network parameters from elastic waves. Synthetic fracture networks characterized by power‐law length exponent a $a$, fracture density d $d$, and percolation parameter p $p$ are constructed.
