Evidence for a Role of Extraintestinal Pathogenic Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis and Streptococcus gallolyticus in the Aetiology of Exudative Cloacitis in the Critically Endangered Kākāpō (Strigops habroptilus)

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The kākāpō is a critically endangered flightless parrot which suffers from exudative cloacitis, a debilitating disease resulting in inflammation of the vent margin or cloaca. Despite this disease emerging over 20 years ago, the cause of exudative cloacitis remains elusive.

DNA Methylation Reflects Cis‐Genetic Differentiation Across the European Crow Hybrid Zone

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Chromatin modifications provide a substrate for epigenetic variation with evolutionary potential. To quantify the contribution of this layer of variation during speciation in crows, we leveraged genome and methylome sequencing data from an incipient avian species: all‐black carrion crows, grey‐coated hooded crows, and their hybrids.

A Small RNA Derived From the 5′ End of the IS200 tnpA Transcript Regulates Multiple Virulence Regulons in Salmonella typhimurium

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, EarlyView.
We show deletion of an IS200‐encoded sRNA (5′tnpA) in Salmonella impacts the expression of SPI‐1, flagellar, cysteine, and phsABC regulons. Evidence is presented that, with regard to the SPI‐1 regulon, 5′tnpA may function through base pairing with another sRNA known to regulate SPI1 called PinT.

A Cas12a Toolbox for Rapid and Flexible Group B Streptococcus Genomic Editing and CRISPRi

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, EarlyView.
We developed a resource set and protocols that allow researchers to quickly alter or silence genes in Group B Streptococcus. Using flexible plasmids and a drug‐inducible Cas12a system, the approach enables efficient generation of insertions, deletions, or knockdowns. These tools are publicly available.
