The iris-fixated phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) has been available for over 25 years. To provide a clear picture of outcomes and risks, for this systematic review and meta-analysis, the literature was searched for reports on middle- and long-term effects.

Phakic posterior chamber intraocular lens pupillary block
Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, 2002A 49-year-old woman developed bilateral pupillary block after implantation of a phakic posterior chamber intraocular lens despite patent-appearing but nonfunctional peripheral iridotomies. This case serves as a basis to identify clinical signs that distinguish this diagnosis from other causes of elevated intraocular pressure and types of pupillary ...

Refractive lens exchange versus phakic intraocular lenses
Current Opinion in Ophthalmology, 2012To review the evidential basis of current practice in refractive lens exchange (RLE) vs. phakic intraocular lens (pIOL).Visual outcomes after pIOLs are better than RLE. With RLE, there still remain risks of retinal detachment, cystoid macular oedema, glare, halos and posterior capsule opacification.

Intraocular lens implantation in phakic rabbit eyes
Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, 1989Three sizes (13.5 mm, 17.5 mm, and 18.5 mm) of open loop, one piece, poly(methyl methacrylate) anterior chamber intraocular lenses (IOLs) were implanted in 12 phakic rabbit eyes to evaluate the effect of the IOL on the crystalline lens and the anterior chamber. Six eyes were used as a control group. Minimum follow-up was four weeks.

Cataract surgery following phakic intraocular lens implantation
Current Opinion in Ophthalmology, 2010To review the most recent literature regarding the incidence and pathophysiology of phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) associated cataracts, surgical issues and outcomes of combined pIOL explantation/cataract surgery, and the prevention of cataract formation secondary to pIOLs.The overall rate of cataracts secondary to pIOLs is low, but a disproportionate ...
