In an ideal scenario, a phase field model is able to compute quantitative aspects of the evolution of microstructure without explicit intervention. The method is particularly appealing because it provides a visual impression of the development of structure, one which often matches observations.

This article reviews the principles and applications of the phase field technique for modeling phase transformations and microstructural evolutions, with an emphasis on solid-solid transformations. Conventional phase field models, which rely on phenomenological thermodynamic and kinetic descriptions, are first presented and examples of application are ...

Phase-field methods for interfacial boundaries
Physical Review B, 1986A Landau-Ginzburg approach to an interface with finite thickness incorporates surface tension, anisotropy, curvature, and dynamics of the interface along with supercooling. Various aspects are rigorous.

The phase-field method to modeling microstructure evolution in materials is introduced in this chapter. It can be employed to model, understand, and predict complex material behaviors at meso-scale (on the order of nano- to micro-meter size), and it covers application-relevant time scales (on the order of seconds to years).

Coalescence of surfactant-laden drops by Phase Field Method [PDF]
In this work, we propose and test the validity of a modified Phase Field Method (PFM), which was specifically developed for large scale simulations of turbulent flows with large and deformable surfactant-laden droplets. The time evolution of the phase field, ϕ, and of the surfactant concentration field, ψ, are obtained from two Cahn-Hilliard-like ...

Magnetic fields mapping with the phase reference method
Magnetic Resonance Imaging, 1999A simple method for imaging the magnetic field produced by arbitrary current distributions is presented. The method is based on the use of a phase reference image and can be easily adapted to any standard magnetic resonance imaging scanner. Examples are given to application to gradient coil characterization and quantitative field measurements.
