Characterization of Mn5Ge3 Contacts on a Shallow Ge/SiGe Heterostructure

open access: yesNanomaterials
Mn5Ge3 is a ferromagnetic phase of the Mn-Ge system that is a potential contact material for efficient spin injection and detection. Here, we investigate the creation of Mn5Ge3-based contacts on a Ge/SiGe quantum well heterostructure via solid-state ...

Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation from reaction of isoprene with nitrate radicals (NO_3) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation from the reaction of isoprene with nitrate radicals (NO3) is investigated in the Caltech indoor chambers.

Atomic defects and dopants in ternary Z-phase transition-metal nitrides CrMN with M=V, Nb, Ta investigated with density functional theory

open access: yes, 2017
A density functional theory study of atomic defects and dopants in ternary Z-phase transition-metal nitrides CrMN with M=V, Nb, or Ta is presented. Various defect formation energies of native point defects and of substitutional atoms of other metal ...

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulation of binary charged lipid membranes: Phase separation and morphological dynamics

open access: yes, 2016
Biomembranes, which are mainly composed of neutral and charged lipids, exhibit a large variety of functional structures and dynamics. Here, we report a coarse-grained molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of the phase separation and morphological dynamics ...

Phase Pattern Formation in Grain Boundaries

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters
In this Letter we derive conditions that predict the existence of two-phase periodic-pattern grain boundary structures that are stable against coarsening. While previous research has established that elastic effects can lead to phase pattern formation on crystal surfaces, the possibility of stable grain boundary structures composed of alternating grain

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Boron in Palladium: interaction, phase formation and phase transformation

open access: yes, 2001
The principles for the formation of interstitial solid solution have been described in the past by rules, taking in consideration elastic relationships between solvent and solute atoms. These rules are not applicable on the formation of the solid solution of the late transition metals (a-Co, Rh, Ir, Ni, Pd, Pt) and boron.

Modeling of metastable phase formation diagrams for sputtered thin films

open access: yesScience and Technology of Advanced Materials, 2016
A method to model the metastable phase formation in the Cu–W system based on the critical surface diffusion distance has been developed. The driver for the formation of a second phase is the critical diffusion distance which is dependent on the ...
