Ultrasonic Technique For Measuring Phase Holdups In Multiphase Systems

Chemical Engineering Communications, 2005
ABSTRACT An ultrasonic technique is being developed to detect the dispersed phase holdups in multiphase systems. This technique is based on the fact that the transmission time and attenuation of ultrasound in suspensions differ from those in pure liquids.

Local phase holdups in gas‐solids fluidization and transport

AIChE Journal, 2001
AbstractA two‐phase structural model consisting of a dense phase and a dilute phase with allowance for the dense‐phase expansion and the solids holdup in the dilute phase was developed and successfully applied to the analysis of local voidage fluctuation signals.

Gas holdup in a three-phase fluidized-bed bioreactor

Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology, 1990
The effects of system parameters on the gas holdup in a three-phase fluidized-bed bioreactor were examined. A valve technique was used to measure the average gas holdup in the reactor. Gas holdup was found to be strongly affected by fluid superficial velocities, bead size and density, electrolyte concentration, type of gas sparger, and temperature ...

Holdup of the liquid slug in two phase intermittent flow

International Journal of Multiphase Flow, 1985
Abstract A physical model for the prediction of gas holdup in liquid slugs in horizontal and vertical two phase pipe slug flow is presented. This model can also be used to yield the transition between elonganted bubbles and slug flow within the intermittent flow pattern.

Study of gas holdup for bubble column at three phases

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2018
The gas holdup of bubble column reactor is an important step to designing an efficient slurry reactor for large-scale conversion of synthesis gas to liquid hydrocarbons. Gas holdup considered a main variable affecting the reaction rate of gas-to-liquid (GTL) conversion.

A Production Logging Measurement of Distributed Local Phase Holdup

European Production Operations Conference and Exhibition, 1996
Abstract This paper describes early UKCS experience of a new production logging sensor, the Digital Entry and Fluid Imager, or DEFT* tool. Deviated and horizontal wells can cause complex flow regimes to arise that render interpretation of conventional production logging sensors difficult or sometimes impossible.

HYDRODYNAMICS OF UNBAFFLED BUBBLE COLUMNS: GAS-PHASE HOLDUP

Chemical Engineering Communications, 1999
Abstract Gas-phase holdup is measured in a 0·305 m diameter bubble column at ambient temperature and pressure as a function of superficial gas velocity. An air-water system is investigated for two values (1.35  m and 2.45  m) of the slumped water column height and air velocity in the range 0–0·3  m/s.

Use of ultrasound for phase holdup measurements in multiphase systems

The Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, 2001
AbstractThis study evaluates ultrasound as a non‐invasive technique for determining the cross‐sectional holdups of multiphase systems. Experiments are performed in a column of 292 mm inner diameter with air, water and uniform glass beads of 1.3 mm diameter as the particles.

Liquid Holdup Correlations for Inclined Two-Phase Flow

Journal of Petroleum Technology, 1983
Summary Liquid holdup behavior in two-phase inclined flow was studied in an inclined pipe-flow simulator. Two sets of empirical equations, one each for uphill and downhill flow, are presented. For downhill stratified flow, a third equation is presented.

Dispersion and holdup in a three-phase fluidized-bed bioreactor

Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology, 1989
Axial dispersion and phase holdup measurements were made using electroconductivity in a fermenting fluidized-bed bioreactor (FBR) and in a model nonfermenting three-phase FBR. Multiple axial conductivity probes were used to nonintrusively monitor the bed conductivity.
