Instabilities near the QCD phase transition in the holographic models

open access: yes, 2013
This paper discusses phenomena close to the critical QCD temperature, using the holographic model. One issue studied is the overcooled high-T phase, in which we calculate quasinormal sound modes.

CD47 promotes mitogen‐activated protein kinase and epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition molecular programs to drive prometastatic phenotypes in non‐small cell lung cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Beyond its role in immune evasion, this study identified that CD47 drives tumor‐intrinsic signaling in non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Transcriptomic profiling and functional studies revealed that CD47 regulates cell adhesion, migration, and metastasis through an ERK–EMT signaling axis.

Adventure in Topological Phase Transitions in 3+1-D: Non-Abelian Deconfined Quantum Criticalities and a Possible Duality

open access: yesPhysical Review X, 2019
Continuous quantum phase transitions beyond the conventional paradigm of fluctuations of a symmetry-breaking order parameter are challenging for theory.

Partial Deconfinement

open access: yesJournal of High Energy Physics, 2019
We argue that the confined and deconfined phases in gauge theories are connected by a partially deconfined phase (i.e. SU(M) in SU(N), where M < N, is deconfined), which can be stable or unstable depending on the details of the theory. When this phase is

Heterozygous loss‐of‐function alleles associate the conserved 3′‐5′ exoribonuclease EXOSC10 with hypersensitivity to the anticancer drug 5‐fluorouracil

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
EXOSC10, an essential nuclear RNA exosome‐associated 3′‐5′ exoribonuclease, is inhibited by the anticancer drug 5‐fluorouracil (5‐FU), and EXOSC10 depletion increases 5‐FU sensitivity. The colon‐cancer variant EXOSC10S402T, located in a proteolysis motif, is stable and nuclear but nonfunctional in vivo.

Cell‐cycle‐specific lesion evolution rather than inhibition of double‐strand‐break repair underpins cisplatin radiosensitization

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We analyze cisplatin–DNA adducts (CDAs) and double‐strand breaks (DSBs) in a cell‐cycle‐dependent manner. We find that CDAs form similarly across all cell cycle phases. DSBs arise only in S‐phase. CDAs might not directly impair DSB repair, but S‐phase DSB lesions evolve in the presence of CDAs and disrupt repair in G2, also causing radiosensitization ...

The large N phase diagram of N $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 2 SU(N) Chern-Simons theory with one fundamental chiral multiplet

open access: yesJournal of High Energy Physics, 2019
We study the theory of a single fundamental fermion and boson coupled to Chern-Simons theory at leading order in the large N limit. Utilizing recent progress in understanding the Higgsed phase in Chern-Simons-Matter theories, we compute the quantum ...

Turn and Face the Strange... Ch-ch-changes: Philosophical Questions Raised by Phase Transitions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Phase transitions are an important instance of putatively emergent behavior. Unlike many things claimed emergent by philosophers (e.g., tables and chairs), the alleged emergence of phase transitions stems from both philosophical and scientific arguments.

Modelling general anaesthesia as a first-order phase transition in the cortex

open access: yes, 2004
Since 1997 we have been developing a theoretical foundation for general anaesthesia. We have been able to demonstrate that the abrupt change in brain state broughton by anaesthetic drugs can be characterized as a first-order phase transition in the ...
