Phase Equilibria, Phase Diagrams and Phase Transformations

2007
Computational tools allow material scientists to model and analyze increasingly complicated systems to appreciate material behavior. Accurate use and interpretation however, requires a strong understanding of the thermodynamic principles that underpin phase equilibrium, transformation and state.

Martensitic Phase Transformation

2020
This chapter provides a summary of basic knowledge on martensitic phase transformation in general and in steels, in particular. Besides the thermodynamic aspects of martensitic phase transformation, the different transformation path’s (direct γ to α’, direct γ to e, direct e to α’ and indirect γ to e to α’) occurring in steels are described in detail ...

Structural Phase Transformation

1994
Examples of phase transformations (transitions) in various materials are first introduced and the difference between the continuous and discontinuous transformation is outlined. The difference is theoretically analyzed by combining Ehrenfest’s criterion and Landau’s formulation and graphically shown by the G—T—η; diagrams.
