Pheromone stereochemical specificity in the biology of the bean beetle Acanthoscelides obtectus

open access: yesAgricultural and Forest Entomology, EarlyView.
Abstract The dried bean beetle, Acanthoscelides obtectus, is a serious pest of legume crops, particularly Phaseolus vulgaris beans, and its management is challenging due to the beetle's cryptic larval stage. The major male‐produced pheromone of A. obtectus is methyl (E,R)‐2,4,5‐tetradecatrienoate, crucial for female attraction, with the (S)‐enantiomer ...

The characterization of a new set of EST-derived simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers as a resource for the genetic analysis of Phaseolus vulgaris

open access: yesBMC Genetics, 2011
Background Over recent years, a growing effort has been made to develop microsatellite markers for the genomic analysis of the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) to broaden the knowledge of the molecular genetic basis of this species.

Salinity-Induced Variation in Biochemical Markers Provides Insight into the Mechanisms of Salt Tolerance in Common (Phaseolus vulgaris) and Runner (P. coccineus) Beans

open access: yesInternational Journal of Molecular Sciences, 2016
The evaluation of biochemical markers is important for the understanding of the mechanisms of tolerance to salinity of Phaseolus beans. We have evaluated several growth parameters in young plants of three Phaseolus vulgaris cultivars subjected to four ...

Plant diversification impact on the oviposition response of a predatory bug in a laboratory set‐up

open access: yesAgricultural and Forest Entomology, EarlyView.
Orius majusculus laid nearly twice as many eggs in cages with two different crop species compared with a single species. Depending on crop species, O. majusculus utilised different plant structures for oviposition. Crop diversification supports reproduction, and thus, is likely to have a positive effect on O.

The accumulation of the cyanobacterial toxin, microcystin, in cherry tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) and bush bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) plants [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We aimed to develop a high-sensitivity method to detect microcystin toxins in fruit tissue and to determine if irrigation with water containing toxic cyanobacteria may result in accumulation of microcystin toxins in fruit tissue and affect fruit ...

The Paleobiolinguistics of the Common Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)

open access: yesEthnobiology Letters, 2014
Paleobiolinguistics is used to determine when and where the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) developed significance for prehistoric groups of Native America. Dates and locations of proto-languages for which common bean terms reconstruct generally accord with crop-origin and dispersal information from plant genetics and archaeobotany ...

Does Providing Free Trial Packs With Demonstration Plots Increase the Adoption of Agricultural Technologies? Cost Effectiveness Evidence From Tanzania

open access: yesAgricultural Economics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study evaluates the effectiveness of the common practice of providing free trial packs alongside demonstration plots managed by local extension agents to promote learning‐by‐doing and increase technology adoption among bean farmers in Tanzania. The experiment randomly assigned some villages to forgo trial packs containing seeds and a seed
