Black grouse Lyrurus tetrix declines continue throughout much of temperate Europe, following habitat loss and population isolation, associated with reduced productivity. In northern England, only 1437 lekking males remained in 2014, genetically isolated from other UK populations, and typified by low productivity but high adult survival.

Newcastle disease in pheasants (Phasianus colchicus): A review
Newcastle disease (ND) is regarded throughout the world as one of the most important diseases of poultry, not only due to the serious disease and high flock mortality that may result from some ND virus (NDV) infections, but also through the economic impact that may ensue due to trading restrictions and embargoes placed on areas and countries where ...

During the 18th and 19th centuries, bird feathers (class: Aves) were harvested from wild populations and sold globally in enormous quantities to meet the rising demand of the fashion industry. Although many laws now prevent similar widescale harvest, there is a paucity of studies on the trade that has continued to occur since the 20th century.

Prevalence of thermotolerantCampylobacterin pheasants (Phasianus colchicus)
The present study was undertaken with the aim to evaluate the prevalence of thermotolerant Campylobacter spp. in living pheasants in Italy. To achieve this goal, a total of 240 living pheasants, equally shared between female and male birds, were examined. Thermotolerant Campylobacter spp. was isolated in 104 out of 204 (43.3%) living pheasants analysed.

Analysis of 57 536 high‐throughput sequencing datasets uncovers a vast, hidden world of viruses in wildlife. The researchers reveal significant geographic and host‐specific patterns of viruses, and their surprising cross‐species transmissions, such as avian flu viruses infecting goats.
