PMUs [phasor measurement unit]
IEEE Potentials, 1994In the spring of 1993, a major new 500 kV transmission line was put in service in Northern California. Test engineers initiated a series of artificial short-circuit faults to test the line installation. As an experiment, the steady-state and transient responses of the power system were recorded.

Calibration of phasor measurement unit at NIST
2012 Conference on Precision electromagnetic Measurements, 2012Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) are being deployed on electric power grids to monitor their static and dynamic behavior. The information they gather is important to detect problems on these systems and to prevent blackouts. The PMUs require time synchronization of the data taken across the grids.

Phasor measurement units: Functionality and applications
2009 Power Systems Conference, 2009Operating of electric power systems is becoming more and more complex and is posing more and more challenges every day as they are operated close to their stability limits. Electrical power systems are expending (renewable energy source RES, distributed generation DG, independent power producers IPPs, etc.

On the accuracy specifications of Phasor Measurement Units
2010 IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement Technology Conference Proceedings, 2010A critical overview of the accuracy specifications of Phasor Measurement Units in the measurement of synchrophasors is presented in this work. The focus is both on the possible ambiguity arising from the definition of Total Vector Error (TVE), provided by the IEEE Standard C37.118-2005, and on the lack of homogeneity in the information provided by PMU ...

Phasor Measurement Unit Diagnosing
2018Based on the global navigation system timestamp an equipment is applied to synchronize the measurement moment in various power buses, which are remote from each other, to measure the current and voltage phasors for the power system control. It is named phasor measurement unit (PMU).

A Design Approach for a Low Cost Phasor Measurement Unit
2019 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC), 2019Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) are playing more and more a crucial role for the development of the “smartness” of power systems. In order to be efficiently used for the smart management of the power systems, a widespread diffusion of PMUs is a becoming a need.

Traceability of calibration for Phasor Measurement Unit
2012 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting, 2012IEEE Standard C37.118.1 defines requirements for the measurement and determination of a Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU). The PMUs must be tested to ensure that all PMUs on the power grid behave the same. In order to meet the requirement of PMU within specified uncertainty, the PMU calibration systems or calibrators must be traceable to known reference ...

Phasor Measurement Unit and Phasor Data Concentrator Cyber Security
2013Future bulk electric transmission systems will include substation automation, synchrophasor measurement systems, and automated control algorithms which leverage wide area monitoring systems to better control the grid. Prior to installation of new networked devices, utilities should perform cybersecurity testing and develop corrective actions for ...

Testing and enhancement of the dynamic performance of a Phasor measurement unit
2015 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting, 2014Phasor measurement units (PMUs) provide the basis for synchrophasor measurements, which are good data sources for capturing power system dynamic behavior. The recently published IEEE Standard C37.118.1-2011 characterizes the dynamic performance of synchrophasor measurements with two performance class filters: P-class and M-class.
