Phenformin-Associated Pancreatitis
Annals of Internal Medicine, 1977Although phenformin has been previously reported to be associated with acute pancreatitis, little emphasis of this association has been made in the literature. We report the case of a 70-year-old diabetic man who developed acute hemorrhagic pancreatitis and severe lactic acidosis while taking phenformin. The patient was not taking any other medications,

Phenformin-associated metabolic acidosis
Diabetes, 1976We report 18 consecutive phenformin-treated diabetic patients admitted to this Medical Service acutely ill with metabolic acidosis. Lactic acidosis was anticipated, and documented, in all. Also, however, though most of the patients had only weakly positive, or even negative, serum reactions with the nitroprusside reagent, all were found to have ...

Serum Phenformin Concentrations in Patients with Phenformin-associated Lactic Acidosis
Diabetes, 1977Phenformin concentrations were measured in serum from seven patients with phenformin-associated lactic acidosis, and initial values ranging from 20 to 625 ng./ml. were obtained. Five of the seven patients had serum concentrations within the usual therapeutic range of up to 241 ng./ml. Serum phenformin concentrations were measured serially, and apparent

Phenformin and lactic acidosis
Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics, 1966There is considerable evidence, both from animal studies and clinical reports, to suggest that the hypoglycemic agent phenformin interferes with lactate metabolism. Experimental data are reported which are consistent with a defiCiency in the ability of phenforminâtreated rats to handle endogenous and exogenous lactate.

Lactic Acidosis and Phenformin Hydrochloride
JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1963Two cases of diabetic patients on phenformin (phenethylbiguanide) hydrochloride therapy in metabolic acidosis due to lactic acidosis are described. Each had hypotension due to myocardial and mesenteric infarction respectively. Significant ketosis was not present. Altered lactate metabolism has been described in diabetic patients treated with phenformin

Pharmacokinetics of Phenformin in Man
The Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, 1975Phenformin was assayed in urine, plasma, and sputum specimens, obtained from two healthy volunteers during the four-day period following oral administration of a single therapeutic dose. Approximately one third of the drug was excreted unchanged in the urine.
