Online Crowdfunding Campaigns for People Living With ALS Demonstrate Financial Burden and Unmet Needs

open access: yesMuscle &Nerve, Volume 74, Issue 5, Page 1415-1420, November 2026.
ABSTRACT Introduction/Aims People living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS; pALS) have extensive care needs, from wheelchairs to feeding tubes to caregiving support. The financial impact of these needs on pALS and their caregivers (cALS) has not been fully explored.

Serum Neurofilament Light Chain and GFAP in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis on a Commercial ECLIA Platform

open access: yesMuscle &Nerve, Volume 74, Issue 5, Page 1398-1405, November 2026.
ABSTRACT Introduction/Aims In amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), SIMOA‐based studies show that baseline serum neurofilament light chain (NfL) predicts the revised ALS Functional Rating Scale (ALSFRS‐R) decline rate and survival. The Roche Elecsys electrochemiluminescence immunoassay (ECLIA) reports values approximately six‐fold lower; cross‐platform ...

Antimicrobial Activity and In Silico ADME Properties of Tyrosol and Their Derivatives Compounds

open access: yesChemistrySelect, Volume 11, Issue 41, 3 November 2026.
In the present study, tyrosol derivatives were obtained with the aim of improving their antimicrobial activity. Derivative 2 exhibited good antimicrobial activity, with an MIC of 3.9 µg/mL. Derivative 3, meanwhile, showed moderate activity and is novel in the literature. ABSTRACT According to the World Health Organization (WHO), bacterial resistance is

Clinical and genetic characterization of intellectual disability

open access: yesDevelopmental Medicine &Child Neurology, Volume 68, Issue 11, Page 1601-1609, November 2026.
This study examines the etiological factors and comorbidities in a large cohort of Finnish patients with intellectual disability. Genetic causes—including chromosomal abnormalities and pathogenic gene variants—were more frequently identified in individuals with moderate to profound intellectual disability.

Riluzole‐Derived Benzo[d]thiazoles as CK1δ Inhibitors for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis‐Related Neurodegeneration

open access: yesChemMedChem, Volume 21, Issue 20, 28 October 2026.
Riluzole metabolism guided the design of benzo[d]thiazole inhibitors of casein kinase 1 delta (CK1δ), a kinase linked to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Docking supported ATP site recognition by the hydroxylamine metabolite and hydrazine analogues, leading to compounds showing improved potency and retained predicted blood brain barrier ...

Switch from Sodium Phenylbutyrate to Glycerol Phenylbutyrate Improved Metabolic Stability in an Adolescent with Ornithine Transcarbamylase Deficiency [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
A male patient, born in 1999, was diagnosed with ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency as neonate and was managed with a strict low-protein diet supplemented with essential amino acids, L-citrulline, and L-arginine as well as sodium benzoate. He had an extensive history of hospitalizations for hyperammonemic crises throughout childhood and early ...

QRICH1 Disrupts Endoplasmic Reticulum Homeostasis and Amplifies NF‐κB Signaling in Periodontal Ligament Stem Cells to Exacerbate Diabetic Periodontitis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 56, 9 October 2026.
QRICH1 has been established as a key factor contributing to impaired osteogenic potential and accelerated apoptosis of PDLSCs in diabetic periodontitis. QRICH1 not only significantly enhances UPR‐associated apoptotic signaling but also amplifies NF‐κB‐mediated inflammatory responses. Its inhibition restores osteogenic capacity and reduces alveolar bone

ATF3 Promotes Solasonine‐Triggered Ferroptosis in Glioma Cells by Suppressing Glycolysis

open access: yesCNS Neuroscience &Therapeutics, Volume 32, Issue 10, October 2026.
Solasonine inhibits glycolysis by increasing ATF3 expression, thereby increasing hydrogen peroxide levels, promoting ferritinophagy and lipid peroxidation, leading to ferroptosis. Furthermore, hydrogen peroxide activates endoplasmic reticulum stress, promoting ATF3 expression, and the whole process forms a positive feedback loop.

Hydroxyurea and sodium phenylbutyrate therapy in thalassemia intermedia [PDF]

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Hematology, 1999
Hydroxyurea (HU) and sodium phenylbutyrate (SPB) have been shown to increase fetal hemoglobin (Hb F) levels in patients with thalassemia intermedia. The reported effects of these agents in increasing total Hb, however, have been inconsistent and there have been no studies on the combination of these medications.

Short‐Chain Fatty Acids: Microbial Metabolites Driving Gut‐Eye Axis Signaling

open access: yesComprehensive Physiology, Volume 16, Issue 5, October 2026.
Short‐chain fatty acids generated by gut microbial fermentation link diet to ocular physiology via the gut–eye axis. Through systemic distribution, these metabolites regulate GPCR signaling, epigenetic pathways, inflammation, and angiogenesis, shaping retinal homeostasis and highlighting therapeutic potential in ocular vascular and inflammatory ...
