Analysis of the Current Risk of Leishmania infantum Transmission in Greece and its Projection

open access: yesTransboundary and Emerging Diseases, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
Canine leishmaniasis is a vector‐borne disease caused by the protozoan parasite Leishmania infantum. It is transmitted by different species of the genus Phlebotomus, with Phlebotomus perfiliewi and Phlebotomus tobbi being the most widely distributed species in Greece.

Diagnostic Importance of Female External Genital Structure of Phlebotomine Sand Flies (Diptera:Psychodidae) as Observed by Scanning Electron Microscopy

open access: yesMemorias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, 1997
Morphological description of sand flies has remained a neglected area. The different organs used in taxonomy have not yet been described adequately with the scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

First Isolations of Arboviruses from Phlebotomine Sand Flies in West Africa

open access: yesThe American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 1994
For the first time in West Africa, arboviruses were isolated from phlebotomine sand fly pools. One strain of Chandipura virus (a Vesiculovirus), four strains of Saboya virus (a Flavivirus), and one strain of a not yet identified virus were isolated. Three hundred twenty-two pools were established from a population of 33,917 sand flies caught in CO2 ...

Natural Leishmania (Viannia) spp. infections in phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) from the Brazilian Amazon region reveal new putative transmission cycles of American cutaneous leishmaniasis

open access: yesParasite, 2016
In Amazonian Brazil the etiological agents of American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) belong to at least seven Leishmania species but little is known about the putative phlebotomine sand fly vectors in different biomes.

Species composition of sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) in caves of Quadrilátero Ferrífero, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2020
Caves are extreme and inhospitable environments that can harbor several species of vertebrate and invertebrate animals. Among these animals are phlebotomine sand flies, vectors of parasites of the genus Leishmania that cause leishmaniasis.

Some Psychodidae (Diptera) from Atlantic Forest in South-Eastern Brazil, with descriptions of Trichomyia dolichopogon sp. nov. and Trichomyia riodocensis sp. nov.

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Biology, 2001
The family Psychodidae includes the medically important phlebotomine sand flies and four other subfamilies that have been little studied in the Neotropics. The authors here report the results of a trip to collect psychodids in Parque Estadual do Rio Doce,

MOLECULAR DETECTION OF Leishmania IN PHLEBOTOMINE SAND FLIES IN A CUTANEOUS AND VISCERAL LEISHMANIASIS ENDEMIC AREA IN NORTHEASTERN BRAZIL

open access: yesRevista do Instituto de Medicina Tropical de São Paulo, 2014
Several phlebotomine sand fly species have been regarded as putative or proven vectors of parasites of the genus Leishmania in Brazil, but data for the northeastern region remains incipient.
