Evaluation of a Digital Health Model of Care for the Management of Adults With Symptomatic Malignant Pleural Effusion

open access: yesRespirology Case Reports, Volume 13, Issue 6, June 2025.
Digital health may improve access to MPE treatments by reducing barriers to specialist care and facilitating training and support for community staff. This trial assesses the SAPS model of care, providing data on barriers and facilitators to its implementation, its efficacy, costs and qualitative outcomes.

The wider perspective: Barriers and recommendations for transfusion support for patients with sickle cell disease in low‐ and middle‐income countries

open access: yesBritish Journal of Haematology, Volume 206, Issue 6, Page 1585-1592, June 2025.
Globally, sickle cell disease (SCD) is the most common inherited haemoglobinopathy. The highest burden of SCD is encountered in low‐ and middle‐income countries (LMICs), most of which lack the resources to contend with the disease. Blood transfusion remains central to the emergent treatment and prevention of complications of SCD.

The role of red blood cell characteristics and viscosity in sickle cell retinopathy and maculopathy

open access: yesBritish Journal of Haematology, Volume 206, Issue 6, Page 1796-1805, June 2025.
Sickle cell retinopathy and maculopathy are common ocular complications of sickle cell disease. This study assessed the contribution of red blood cell characteristics and blood viscosity to their development. HbSC patients with proliferative retinopathy showed a lower delta elongation index and point of sickling, while no link was found between whole ...
