Establishment of an Early Prediction Model for Severe Fever With Thrombocytopenia Syndrome‐Associated Encephalitis

open access: yesImmunity, Inflammation and Disease, Volume 12, Issue 12, December 2024.
ABSTRACT Background Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging infectious disease primarily transmitted by ticks. The development of encephalitis in SFTS patients significantly increases the risk of adverse outcomes. However, the understanding of SFTS‐associated encephalitis (SFTSAE) is still limited. This study aimed to identify

Novel Phlebovirus in Febrile Child, Greece

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2011
To the Editor: Phleboviruses (family Bunyaviridae, genus Phlebovirus) are arthropod-borne, single-stranded, RNA viruses. Their genome consists of 3 segments—small, medium, and large—which encode the nucleoprotein and nonstructural proteins, the envelope glycoproteins, and the viral polymerase, respectively (1).

Sand Fly–Associated Phlebovirus with Evidence of Neutralizing Antibodies in Humans, Kenya

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2019
We describe a novel virus, designated Ntepes virus (NPV), isolated from sand flies in Kenya. NPV has the characteristic phlebovirus trisegmented genome architecture and is related to, but distinct from, Gabek Forest phlebovirus.

Early prognosis biomarkers of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome

open access: yesiLABMED, Volume 2, Issue 4, Page 341-351, December 2024.
SFTSV interacts with the host's immune defenses, prompting the engagement of both innate and adaptive immune responses by effector cells. This interaction ultimately results in the activation and proliferation of relevant cytokines. Abstract Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging infectious disease that results from SFTS ...

Inter-Epidemic Transmission of Rift Valley Fever in\ud Livestock in the Kilombero River Valley, Tanzania:\ud A Cross-Sectional Survey [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
In recent years, evidence of Rift Valley fever (RVF) transmission during inter-epidemic periods in parts of Africa has increasingly been reported. The inter-epidemic transmissions generally pass undetected where there is no surveillance in the livestock ...

A cross‐sectional study on phlebotomine sand flies in relation to disease transmission in the Republic of Kosovo

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, Volume 38, Issue 4, Page 573-585, December 2024.
We provide the currently known sand fly distribution and species diversity in Kosovo, including a COI barcode inventory and distribution maps. Phlebotomus neglectus and Ph. perfiliewi were identified to be the predominant species and environmental analyses depicted two geographical groups of sand flies in Kosovo, with notable differences between the ...

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome: the disease, caused by the novel phlebovirus

open access: diamondProblems of Virology, 2017
Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging infectious disease caused by a new virus (SFTS virus) reported to be endemic to central and northeastern parts of China. SFTS virus, which is classified into the genus Phlebovirus (the Bunyaviridae family), is suspected to be a tick-borne virus owing to evidence in two species of ticks ...

Experimental Infection of Dogs with Toscana Virus and Sandfly Fever Sicilian Virus to Determine Their Potential as Possible Vertebrate Hosts

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2020
The sandfly-borne Toscana phlebovirus (TOSV), a close relative of the sandfly fever Sicilian phlebovirus (SFSV), is one of the most common causes of acute meningitis or meningoencephalitis in humans in the Mediterranean Basin.

Crystal structure of Schmallenberg orthobunyavirus nucleoprotein-RNA complex reveals a novel RNA sequestration mechanism [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Schmallenberg virus (SBV) is a newly emerged orthobunyavirus (family Bunyaviridae) that has caused severe disease in the offspring of farm animals across Europe.

Clinical and etiological characteristics of severe hemorrhagic fever caused by coinfection of hantaan orthohantavirus and severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus

open access: yesJournal of Medical Virology, Volume 96, Issue 9, September 2024.
Abstract Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) and hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) usually have different infection routes, and coinfection is relatively rare. This study examines the clinical and etiological characteristics of coinfection by these two pathogens to provide important references for clinical diagnosis and ...
