Molecular organization of cholesterol in unsaturated phosphatidylethanolamines: X-ray diffraction and solid state 2H NMR reveal differences with phosphatidylcholines.

Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2006
The major mammalian plasma membrane lipids are phosphatidylcholines (PCs), phosphatidylethanolamines (PEs), and cholesterol. Whereas PC-cholesterol interactions are well studied, far less is known about those between PE and cholesterol.

The Equilibria of Phosphatidylethanolamine-Cholesterol and Phosphatidylcholine–Phosphatidylethanolamine in Monolayers at the Air/Water Interface

Journal of Macromolecular Science, Part A, 2009
Monolayers of phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), cholesterol (Ch), phosphatidylcholine (PC), and binary mixtures (PC-PE or PE-Ch) were investigated at the air/water interface. The surface tension values of pure and mixed monolayers were used to calculate π -A isotherms.

Hexagonal phases in phospholipids with saturated chains: phosphatidylethanolamines and phosphatidic acids.

Biochemistry, 1981
The structure of phospholipids with saturated chains was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and by X-ray diffraction. It is shown that both phosphatidylethanolamines and phosphatidic acids can exhibit a hexagonal phase at high temperature.

Labeling Membranes with Fluorescent Phosphatidylethanolamine

Cold Spring Harbor Protocols, 2011
INTRODUCTIONThe phospholipid phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) can be conjugated via its head group to a number of fluorophores, including rhodamine, BODIPY (boron-dipyrromethene; 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene), and NBD (N-(7-nitrobenz-2-oxa-1,3-diazole-4-yl)).

Studies on the thermotropic behavior of aqueous phosphatidylethanolamines

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Biomembranes, 1983
The thermal response of aqueous dispersions of a series of synthetic saturated phosphatidylethanolamines was studied by differential scanning calorimetry and by infrared spectroscopy. Dispersions which had not been previously heated above tm, the temperature of the gel to liquid crystalline transition, showed transitions at a higher temperature, tm+h ...

Modulation of the bilayer to hexagonal phase transition and solvation of phosphatidylethanolamines in aqueous salt solutions.

Biochemistry, 1988
Several salts affect the temperature of the bilayer to hexagonal phase transition of phosphatidylethanolamines. Their effects are dependent on the anion as well as the cation of the salt.

Extended hydrogen-bonded structures of phosphatidylethanolamine

Chemistry and Physics of Lipids, 1988
The structure of phosphatidylethanolamine in pure dry hexane was studied. Viscosity measurements show that the hexane solution of PE has a very high viscosity, while freeze fracture electron microscopy revealed extensive fibre-like structures. These extended structures are disrupted by the addition of small amounts of water or organic solvents which ...

Pressure effects on lamellar and inverse curved phases of fully hydrated dialkyl phosphatidylethanolamines and β-D-xylopyranosyl-sn-glycerols

, 1997
We report on the effects of hydrostatic pressure and temperature on the phase and structural behavior of the complete range of the known, excess water, inverse lyotropic mesophases.

Determination of the fatty acyl profiles of phosphatidylethanolamines by tandem mass spectrometry of sodium adducts.

Rapid Communications in Mass Spectrometry, 2008
Phosphatidylethanolamines (PEs) are one of the major constituents of cellular membranes, and, along with other phospholipid classes, have an essential role in the physiology of cells.

Adhesion between Phosphatidylethanolamine Bilayers

Langmuir, 1996
The goal of this study is to provide additional information on the short-range interactions that determine the adhesion energy between bilayer surfaces. The specific problem concerns the hydration properties of bilayers of the membrane lipid phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), which imbibe much less water than bilayers composed of the other common ...
