Publisher Summary This chapter describes the assay method, purification procedures, and properties of the spleen phospholipases A 2 enzymes. As an optimal molar ratio depends on the detergent-phospholipid combination, the ratio is determined for each set of detergent and phospholipid.

Phospholipase A2 activity in dystrophinopathies
Neuromuscular Disorders, 1995Phospholipase A2 activity in human muscle with or without dystrophin abnormality was studied. The results showed an increased phospholipase A2 activity in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) patients (1160 +/- 160, P < 0.01) compared to controls (< 200 U mg-1).

Phospholipase A2 in experimental hypertension
American Journal of Physiology-Legacy Content, 1975An assay method has been developed to measure phospholipase A2 (PLA2) in ratserum and to study the possible role of this enzyme in experimental hypertension. Experiments with rat serum following 48 h of bilateral nephrectomy indicated a decrease inPLA2 activity, suggesting that kidneys might be playing an important role in regulating serum PLA2 ...

Stimulation of Phospholipases A2 by Transglutaminases
1990Among the enzymes catalyzing post-translational modifications of proteins, transglutaminases (TG; EC 2.3.2.13) have been extensively characterized from the enzymological point of view (1–4). Nevertheless, the physiological role(s) of these enzymes, particularly the intracellular TGs, are still poorly understood.

Immunochemical relatedness between secretory phospholipase A2 and intracellular·phospholipase A2
Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1985The immunochemical relationship between rat pancreatic phospholipase A2 and rat splenic phospholipase A2 was examined with the use of anti-rat pancreatic phospholipase A2 antibody as a probe. The immunoelectrophoretic patterns showed that the antibody cross-reacted with the splenic enzyme.

Mechanisms of inhibition of phospholipase A2
Biochemical Pharmacology, 1980Abstract Differential scanning calorimetry (d.s.c.) and assays of phospholipase A2 activity were used as tools to distinguish between drugs which interact with the phospholipids and those which interact directly with the enzyme. Cholesterol lowered the transition temperature (tc) and reduced the heat absorbed at transition and inhibited phospholipase

Phospholipase A2, an in vivo immunomodulator
Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes and Essential Fatty Acids, 1990Arachidonic acid (AA) can be released from membrane phospholipids by the action of phospholipase A2 (PLA2). There is evidence that unsaturated fatty acids, particularly AA, released from membrane phospholipids are required to activate the respiratory burst of macrophages.

Inhibition of phospholipase A2 by heparin
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Lipids and Lipid Metabolism, 1990Phospholipase A2 (PLA2) is an important enzyme in the regulation of cell behavior. The hydrolysis of phosphatidylcholine in vitro catalyzed by porcine pancreatic PLA2 was inhibited by heparin. Other glycosaminoglycans inhibited PLA2 activity to a significantly lesser extent, with a pattern of inhibition: heparin much greater than chondroitin sulfate ...

Inhibition of phospholipase A2 and phospholipase C by polyamines
Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1978Abstract The polyamines spermine, spermidine, and putrescine inhibit the activity of phospholipase A2 (Naja naja) and phospholipase C (Clostridium welchii) on phospholipid vesicles and mitochondrial membranes as sources of substrate phospholipids. The inhibitory effect is highest for spermine and lowest for putrescine.
