Exploiting the molecular diversity of the synapse to investigate neuronal communication: A guide through the current toolkit

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Neuroscience, Volume 56, Issue 12, Page 6141-6161, December 2022., 2022
Chemical synapses are tiny and overcrowded environments enriched with thousands of protein species. Many efforts have been devoted to developing sensors and actuators able to evaluate and control synaptic communication. Most of these recent tools are based on the engineering of one or more specific synaptic proteins used to target active moieties to ...

Aggregating Spatial and Photometric Context for Photometric Stereo

open access: yes
Photometric stereo, a computer vision technique for estimating the 3D shape of objects through images captured under varying illumination conditions, has been a topic of research for nearly four decades. In its general formulation, photometric stereo is an ill-posed problem and requires robust prior knowledge of material reflectance properties, light ...

Global artificial light masks biologically important light cycles of animals

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and the Environment, EarlyView.
We document the importance of low‐light conditions in 136 animal species and then translate the new world atlas of skyglow, which reports artificial night sky brightness, into estimates of anthropogenic illuminance (that is, artificial light reaching Earth's surface).

Chemogenetic Control of Striatal Astrocytes Improves Parkinsonian Motor Deficits in Mice

open access: yesGlia, EarlyView.
Dopamine depletion reduces locomotion‐induced calcium activity in dorsal striatal astrocytes. Chemogenetic activation facilitates astrocyte locomotion responses and improves motor behavior in dopamine‐lesioned animals. ABSTRACT Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by the degeneration of dopaminergic nigrostriatal inputs, which causes striatal ...

Accuracy of the Photometric Redshifts of Brightest Cluster Galaxies Identified in the CFHTLS-W1

open access: yesJournal of Advanced Research in Natural and Applied Sciences
We determine the accuracy of photometric redshifts for the brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) identified in the W1 field of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS).

The performance of different methods in characterizing soil live prokaryotic diversity and abundance is highly variable

open access: yesiMetaOmics, EarlyView.
We systematically compared and assessed the commonly used methods for studying live soil microbes, including alkaline buffer washing, propidium monoazide (PMA) treatment, DNase pre‐digestion, and rRNA‐based analysis, based on soils collected across the western region of China.

Lentils can Absorb Amino Acids as a Nitrogen Source Supporting Early Growth

open access: yesJournal of Plant Nutrition and Soil Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Lentils (Lens culinaris Medik.) are a valuable crop due to their high nutritional content, low environmental impact, and nitrogen‐fixing ability via rhizobacteria. Early in development, before this symbiosis is established, lentils require external nitrogen, typically supplied through fertilizers or already present in soils.
