A new role for excitation in the retinal direction‐selective circuit

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, Volume 602, Issue 22, Page 6301-6328, 15 November 2024.
Abstract figure legend Direction‐selective retinal ganglion cells (DSGCs) respond to motion in the ‘preferred direction’ (PD), but barely to the motion in the opposite, ‘null direction’ (ND). Using targeted patch‐clamp and multi‐electrode array recordings, we investigated the effects of light adaptation on the response of DSGCs to moving bars.

Pixelation with Concentration‐Encoded Effective Photons for Quantitative Molecular Optical Sectioning Microscopy

open access: yesLaser &Photonics Reviews, Volume 18, Issue 10, October 2024.
Irreproducibility in molecular optical sectioning microscopy hinders converting digital images into quantitative data. Existing tools and metrics struggle with data comparisons across diverse systems. A simple tool (PCEP) based on absolute measurements of bulk fluorophore solutions and Poisson photon statistics is presented.

Unveiling Stellar Feedback and Cloud Structure in the ρ Ophiuchi-A Region Using ALMA and JWST: Discovery of Substellar Cores, C18O Striations, and Protostellar Outflows

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
In clustered star-forming regions, stellar feedback, such as H ii regions/photon-dominated regions (PDRs), and protostellar jets/outflows, shapes cloud structures and influences star formation. Using high-resolution Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter

A non-equilibrium ortho-to-para ratio of water in the Orion PDR [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Context. The ortho-to-para ratio (OPR) of H2O is thought to be sensitive to the temperature of water formation. The OPR of H2O is thus useful for studying the formation mechanism of water.

Probing extreme black‐hole outflows on short timescales via high spectral‐resolution x‐ray imagers

open access: yesAstronomische Nachrichten, Volume 345, Issue 6-7, July-August 2024.
Abstract We investigate outflows and the physics of super‐Eddington versus sub‐Eddington regimes in black hole systems. Our focus is on prospective science using next‐generation high‐resolution soft x‐ray instruments. We highlight the properties of black hole ultraluminous x‐ray source (ULX) systems in particular. Owing to scale invariance in accreting

PHOTON-PROTON TOTAL CROSS SECTION AND FACTORIZATION PROCESS [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
A fit for photon-proton total cross section ( ) data in terms of Regge model has been obtained. As usual the fit can be obtained by calculating the coupling constants of the exchanged Reggeons and pomerons in the process.

Properties of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in the Northwest Photon Dominated Region of NGC 7023. I. PAH Size, Charge, Composition, and Structure Distribution [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission in the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph spectral map of the northwest photon dominated region (PDR) in NGC 7023 was analyzed exclusively using PAH spectra from the NASA Ames PAH IR Spectroscopic Database (www ...

DETERMINANTS OF POVERTY IN LAO PDR [PDF]

open access: yes
Lao PDR has been relatively successful in raising incomes and reducing poverty since the early 1990s. However, the gains in terms of poverty reduction are unevenly distributed across regions and population groups.
