AbstractReducing the complexity of opticalsystems emphasizes the need to increase the number of optical functions in as few modules as possible, making the system more compact and simple to operate. Optical functions such as light generation, frequency conversion, amplification, broadband transmission, wavelength filtering and interfacing to the ...

Modeling of photonic crystal fibers
2007 19th International Conference on Applied Electromagnetics and Communications, 2007This paper presents an analysis and an overview of characteristics and possible applications of periodic and quasi-periodic photonic crystal fibers (PCF). The analysis is based on the decomposition of the transverse electric field into a series of orthogonal modes which are used to solve the vector wave equation for optical fibers.

SPIE Proceedings, 2005
A brief review of three specially designed types of photonic crystal fiber (PCF) that we recently developed for high performance devices is presented. The first is absolutely single polarization PCF (ASPF), which guides only one polarization mode, the second is dispersion-flattened polarization maintaining PCF for Supercontinuum generation, and the ...

Photonic crystal fiber based sensor
2013 21st Signal Processing and Communications Applications Conference (SIU), 2013In this study, the relative sensitivity coefficient of the proposed hexagonal shaped photonic crystal fiber (PCF) has been investigated by employing the full vectorial finite element method (FEM ). Propagation loss and effective refractive index of 36 air holed PCF over wide wavelength range has been investigated.

Elliptical-hole photonic crystal fibers
Optics Letters, 2001We study the dispersive properties of photonic crystal fibers (PCF's) with elliptical air holes. The unusual guidance of PCF leads to novel behavior of the birefringence, group-velocity walk-off, and dispersion parameters, including the possibility of zero walk-off with high birefringence in the single-mode regime. A number of these effects are closely

Leakage losses in photonic crystal fibers
OFC 2003 Optical Fiber Communications Conference, 2003., 2003The reduction of leakage losses is a key issue for PCF optical applications. The finite elements provide a powerful tool for low loss fiber design and foresee losses of the same order of standard fibers.

Photonic crystal fiber for dispersion compensation
Applied Optics, 2008The dispersion and mode characteristics in a dual-concentric-core photonic crystal fiber, based on pure silica, are simulated by the multipole method. The fiber exhibits very large negative dispersion due to anticrossing of two individual inner core and outer core modes.

Photochemistry in Photonic Crystal Fiber Nanoreactors
Chemistry – A European Journal, 2010AbstractWe report the use of a liquid‐filled hollow‐core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) as a highly controlled photochemical reactor. Hollow‐core PCFs have several major advantages over conventional sample cells: the sample volume per optical path length is very small (2.8 nL cm−1 in the fiber used), long optical path lengths are possible as a result of ...

Tomographic imaging of photonic crystal fibers
Optics Letters, 2007The tomographic reconstruction of the refractive index distribution in a large-mode-area photonic fiber is presented. The results of the diffraction tomographic algorithm and classical filtered backprojection method are compared. Additionally, the application of the synthetic aperture technique to tomographic interferometry, as a tool for resolution ...

Photonic crystal fibers with material anisotropy
Optical and Quantum Electronics, 2005In this paper we are modeling the interplay of material and form birefringence in photonic crystal fibers. We introduce an efficient numerical method for the calculation of the modal structure. Our approach relies solving the fully vectorial wave equation for the transverse magnetic field and the respective propagation constants using a plane wave ...
