A compendium of photopigment peak sensitivities and visual spectral response curves of terrestrial wildlife to guide design of outdoor nighttime lighting

open access: yesBasic and Applied Ecology, 2023
The presence and proportions of photopigments, which are responsible for the visual and physiological effects of light, vary between taxonomic groups. This leads to differing wavelength sensitivities ranging from ultraviolet (UV; 780 nm) and complicates ...

Sensing–Computing Fusion in Machine Vision: A Review on Integrated Systems and Emerging Devices

open access: yesAdvanced Photonics Research, Volume 7, Issue 4, April 2026.
The sensing–computing fusion of machine vision systems via complementary metal‐oxide‐semiconductor (CMOS) vision chips and emerging bio‐inspired devices is reviewed. CMOS vision chips are reviewed according to the physical relationships between sensors and processors, and the signal processing methods.

SNAP-25, but not SNAP-23, is essential for photoreceptor development, survival, and function in mice

open access: yesCommunications Biology
SNARE-mediated vesicular transport is thought to play roles in photoreceptor glutamate exocytosis and photopigment delivery. However, the functions of Synaptosomal-associated protein (SNAP) isoforms in photoreceptors are unknown.

Global rise of potential health hazards caused by blue light-induced circadian disruption in modern aging societies

open access: yesnpj Aging and Mechanisms of Disease, 2017
Mammals receive light information through the eyes, which perform two major functions: image forming vision to see objects and non-image forming adaptation of physiology and behavior to light.

Midbrain PAG Astrocytes Modulate Mouse Defensive and Panic‐Like Behaviors

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 19, 2 April 2026.
Astrocytes in the midbrain periaqueductal gray (PAG) dynamically encode threat intensity and shape defensive action selection in mice. Real‐time Ca2+ imaging reveals robust astrocytic activation during predator odor and CO2 exposure. Aberrant astrocytic Ca2+ overactivation disrupts goal‐directed escape, biases behavior toward freezing, and induces ...

The Kinetics of the Synthesis of Photopigments in Rhodopseudomonas spheroides [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of General Microbiology, 1962
SUMMARY: The magnitude of self-shading in light-grown cultures of Rhodopseudomonas spheroides has been estimated. When a culture of R. spheroides is transferred from bright light to dim light there is preferential synthesis of bacteriochlorophyll and carotenoid pigments relative to net protein synthesis. Protein turnover does not account for this.

The Method of Silent Substitution for Examining Melanopsin Contributions to Pupil Control

open access: yesFrontiers in Neurology, 2018
The human pupillary light response is driven by all classes of photoreceptors in the human eye—the three classes of cones, the rods, and the intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) expressing the photopigment melanopsin.

Recent Advances in Nanomaterial‐Based Light Conversion for Agriculture

open access: yesAggregate, Volume 7, Issue 4, April 2026.
This figure illustrates three applications of nanophotoconversion materials for enhanced plant photosynthesis. These materials can directly target plant photosynthetic organs or be integrated into supplemental lights to optimize spectra. They can also be used in agricultural films to regulate sunlight for precise light control in protected agriculture.

Short-wavelength-sensitive 2 (Sws2) visual photopigment models combined with atomistic molecular simulations to predict spectral peaks of absorbance.

open access: yesPLoS Computational Biology, 2020
For many species, vision is one of the most important sensory modalities for mediating essential tasks that include navigation, predation and foraging, predator avoidance, and numerous social behaviors.

Family History and Solar Insolation in Bipolar I Disorder

open access: yesActa Psychiatrica Scandinavica, Volume 153, Issue 4, Page 270-278, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Sunlight has profound impacts on physical and mental health, beyond vision, including effects on circadian rhythms, alertness, mood, and sleep. A family history of any mood disorders is strongly associated with psychiatric disorders including bipolar disorder.
