Photostabilization of photocrosslinked unsaturated polyesters

Polymer Degradation and Stability, 1994
Abstract The photo-oxidative stability of photocrosslinked unsaturated polyesters endcapped with glycidyl acrylate has been investigated by measuring UV, IR and ESCA spectra of thin films and tensile properties of photocrosslinked glass fiber laminates of the polyesters without and with added stabilizers.

Complex formation in photostabilized polypropylene

Polymer Degradation and Stability, 1989
Abstract The formation of a yellow complex between 2-hydroxy-4-octoxybenzophenone and calcium stearate in the matrix of polypropylene has been observed. The same complex was prepared in model conditions and mixed into the polymer. In order to prevent colour changes in polypropylene, aliphatic or aromatic carboxylic acids were used as ‘harder’ ligands.

Polymer photostabilization by surface grafting

Journal of Polymer Science: Polymer Symposia, 1976
AbstractVarious means by which photostabilization of polymers can be achieved are described, and work on a method of photostabilization by surface screening on a substrate polymer is presented. The surface screen is obtained by graft copolymerization of a polymerizable hydroxybenzophenone ultraviolet absorber.

Photostabilization of Polymeric Materials

Journal of Macromolecular Science, Part A, 1996
Abstract Recent advances in our understanding of natural photoprotection mechanisms and the photophysical processes occurring in synthetic macromolecules and ultraviolet absorbing additives are reviewed. The application of photophysical measurements and ultrafast laser spectroscopy demonstrate that energy dissipation pathways in intramolecularly ...

Mechanistic aspects of polymer photostabilization

Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology A: Chemistry, 1989
Abstract A short account of modern theories in polymer degradation under oxidative conditions is followed by a detailed description of the different mechanistic aspects of polymer photostabilization. The discussion concentrates on the compounds presently known as photoantioxidants, which are believed to be the most efficient inhibitors of polymer ...

Photostabilizing activity of sterically hindered piperidines—i

European Polymer Journal, 1980
Abstract The abilities of both 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine (I) and its nitroxyl (II) to trap radicals involved in hydrocarbon photo-oxidations have been studied in cumene and 1,3,5-trimethylcyclohexane at 27° using AIBN, hydroperoxide and dialkylperoxide as initiators: the light was either the band 300–400 nm or 366 nm.

Photostabilization of poly (p-phenylene sulfide)

Polymer Degradation and Stability, 1995
Abstract Various additives have been studied for effectiveness in rendering PPS colorfast against UV light. Only UV-absorber (screener) type stabilizers are found to work satisfactorily for PPS. Color changes (ΔE) ≤ 2 after 50 h irradiation in a weather-Ometer have been obtained by bulk-adding a phenylsulfonyl derivative of a ...

Photostabilization of coatings. Mechanisms and performance

Progress in Polymer Science, 2000
Abstract The lifetime of organic coatings is reduced in outdoor applications by attacks of solar radiation, oxygen and atmospheric pollutants. Undesirable mechanical, physical and chemical consequences of the resulting degradation can be substantially restricted by properly selected photostabilizers.
