Photoprotective Non-photochemical Quenching Does Not Prevent Kleptoplasts From Net Photoinactivation

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2018
The enigmatic association of photosynthetically active chloroplasts from algae and some sacoglossan sea slugs, called functional kleptoplasty, is a functional unique system of photosymbioses observed in metazoans.

Transcriptomic Evidence for the Expression of Horizontally Transferred Algal Nuclear Genes in the Photosynthetic Sea Slug, Elysia chlorotica [PDF]

open access: yesMolecular Biology and Evolution, 2011
Analysis of the transcriptome of the kleptoplastic sea slug, Elysia chlorotica, has revealed the presence of at least 101 chloroplast-encoded gene sequences and 111 transcripts matching 52 nuclear-encoded genes from the chloroplast donor, Vaucheria litorea.

Distinct Bleaching Resilience of Photosynthetic Plastid-Bearing Mollusks Under Thermal Stress and High CO2 Conditions

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2018
The impact of temperature on photo-symbiotic relationships has been highly studied in the tropical reef-forming corals but overlooked in less charismatic groups such as solar-powered sacoglossan sea slugs. These organisms display one of the most puzzling

SYMBIOTIC CHLOROPLASTS; THEIR PHOTOSYNTHETIC PRODUCTS AND CONTRIBUTION TO MUCUS SYNTHESIS IN TWO MARINE SLUGS

open access: yesThe Biological Bulletin, 1972
1. The products of photosynthetic 14CO2 fixation by symbiotic chloroplasts in the marine sacoglossan opisthobranch gastropods Tridachia crispata (Morch) and Tridachiella diomedea (Bergh) were compared with those of the siphonous green alga Caulerpa sertularioides.2.

Photosynthetic animals and where to find them: abundance and size of a solar-powered sea slug in different light conditions

open access: yesMarine Biology, 2023
AbstractThree populations of the solar-powered sea slugElysia crispataon reefs from the southern Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean were analyzed. The aim was to describe and compare the changes in abundance and size of this species in different localities, as a function of depth and time-of-day.

Functional chloroplasts in metazoan cells - a unique evolutionary strategy in animal life

open access: yesFrontiers in Zoology, 2009
Background Among metazoans, retention of functional diet-derived chloroplasts (kleptoplasty) is known only from the sea slug taxon Sacoglossa (Gastropoda: Opisthobranchia). Intracellular maintenance of plastids in the slug's digestive epithelium has long

Horizontal gene transfer of the algal nuclear gene psbO to the photosynthetic sea slug Elysia chlorotica [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2008
The sea slug Elysia chlorotica acquires plastids by ingestion of its algal food source Vaucheria litorea . Organelles are sequestered in the mollusc's digestive epithelium, where they photosynthesize for months in the absence of algal nucleocytoplasm ...

How does temperature affect functional kleptoplasty? Comparing populations of the solar-powered sister-species Elysia timida Risso, 1818 and Elysia cornigera Nuttall, 1989 (Gastropoda: Sacoglossa)

open access: yesFrontiers in Zoology, 2018
Background Despite widespread interest in solar-powered sea slugs (Sacoglossa: Gastropoda), relatively little is know about how they actually perform functional kleptoplasty. Sister-taxa Elysia timida and E.

Competing Charge Separation Pathways Govern Charge Generation in Organic Photovoltaic Blends: Insights From Transient Electron Spin Resonance

open access: yesAdvanced Energy Materials, EarlyView.
Transient electron spin resonance distinguishes interfacial charge‐transfer states from separated charges, revealing competing charge separation pathways in organic photovoltaic blends. The relative contributions of fast charge separation and a pathway mediated by spin‐polarized charge‐transfer states vary across different blends, with high‐efficiency ...

Does the munch affect the bunch? Using community science to explore insect herbivory and fruit production in an understory plant

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
We used iNaturalist records, a longitudinal field survey, and a simulated herbivory experiment to explore how insect herbivory factors are associated with Cornus canadensis fruit production. Naturally observed internal and external insect herbivory was mostly low intensity and did not have a strong relationship with fruit production.
