Phototherapy in Hyperbilirubinemia
AJN, American Journal of Nursing, 1971An abnormally high level of bilirubin in blood serum in the newborn can cause severe brain damage. This review covers the current practice of phototherapy with ultraviolet (UV) radiation without sensitizers and of psoralen photochemotherapy (PUVA) in the treatment of psoriasis. Both treatment modalities are well established in today's therapeutic armamentarium. Phototherapeutic regimens use repeated controlled UV exposures to alter cutaneous biology,

Phototherapy is an effective treatment modality for many types of pruritus. Although the exact mechanisms by which phototherapy reduces itch vary across pruritic conditions, its effects may result from immune suppression and/or neural modulation. In this article, the authors review the efficacy of different types of phototherapy for common inflammatory

We describe the first local use of hypericin as photosensitizer for photodynamic therapy in a patient with recurrent malignant mesothelioma. Hypericin is a polycyclic quinone, which has been shown to possess in vivo and in vitro antiretroviral and photosensitizing activity; moreover, it is used in depressive disorders.

To the Editor.— The impassioned plea by Hein1 to stamp out the use of phototherapy in healthy, term infants with bilirubin levels less than 20 to 25 mg/dL is premature to say the least.
