A study of the root surface phosphatase activities of three species of higher plants: Juncus effusus, Phragnutes australis, and Typha latifolia [PDF]

open access: yes, 1993
The aim of this project was to investigate a possible link between environmental phosphorus status and the root surface phosphatase activities of three species of emergent macrophytes, with a view to assessing their potential for use as "biondicators ...

Dimensions of dace dynamics: temporal variation in abundance and survival of an imperiled desert fish guide habitat restoration

open access: yesRestoration Ecology, EarlyView.
Abstract Introduction Desert fishes are vulnerable to anthropogenic environmental alterations that degrade habitat and reduce water availability, but these same fishes benefit from restoration actions that reverse the causes of decline. Ash Meadows speckled dace (Rhinichthys osculus nevadensis) is a federally endangered minnow endemic to the Mojave ...

Coastal exotic plant serves as a habitat for a notorious wetland pest in unfavorable seasons: A case study of exotic Spartina alterniflora in China

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
Coastal biological invasions pose a wide-reaching threat to various ecosystems, affecting both vegetation and herbivores in native communities. Although herbivores often exert strong top-down control on vegetation, the impact of invasive species on ...

Biodiversitätsmanagement mit Wasserbüffeln in renaturierten Feuchtgebieten [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The use of water buffalos for landscape maintenance started ten years ago in Germany. Now, more than 2,100 buffalos are kept by about 90 breeders, and first results concerning their usefulness for landscape management are available.

Artificial Irrigation Impacts the Seasonal Occurrence of Pathogenic Leptospira in Its Wild Reservoirs in a Mediterranean Environment

open access: yesZoonoses and Public Health, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Human activities play a significant role in the emergence of infectious diseases. We aimed to test whether artificial irrigation affects the occurrence of a zoonotic bacteria sensitive to desiccation, pathogenic Leptospira species (pathoLep), in micromammals inhabiting Mediterranean ecosystems.

Detoxification of Herbicides in Phragmites australis

open access: yesZeitschrift für Naturforschung C, 2005
Abstract Unintentional loss of herbicides into drainage ditches, shores or other waterbodies may cause large problems in farmland. Therefore strategies for the phytoremediation of agrochemicals and especially herbicides have become a topic of great interest in many agricultural areas.

Nest Survival and Failure in Ruffs Breeding on Grazed Coastal Meadows

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 4, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Nest survival is a key determinant of birds' breeding success, particularly in ground‐breeding birds, where nest predation is a major cause of reproductive failure. Birds can maximise their nesting success by optimising aspects of the sociospatial environment of a nest, for example, by reducing the risk of predation or flooding.

Method for treating wastewater using microorganisms and vascular aquatic plants [PDF]

open access: yes, 1983
A method for treating wastewater compresses subjecting the wastewater to an anaerobic setting step for at least 6 hours and passing the liquid effluent from the anaerobic settling step through a filter cell in an upflow manner.

Briny Biology: Nematodes From the Hypersaline Springs of the Central Namib Desert

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 4, April 2026.
We investigated nematode communities in from seven hypersaline desert springs in the central Namib Desert. We found nematodes in most sediment and microbial mat samples collected, with some present (although likely cryptobiotic) at electrical conductivity values exceeding 500 mS/cm.

From invasive species to agricultural resource: evaluation of Phragmites australis from Zarivar Lake as an organic amendment for the release of phosphorus, potassium, micronutrients and toxic metals

open access: yesDiscover Applied Sciences
Overgrowth of Phragmites australis has become a serious issue for Zarivar Lakes and many water bodies worldwide. The objective of this research was to use the harvested common reed as a soil organic amendment.
