Phreatic eruption dynamics derived from deposit analysis: a case study from a small, phreatic eruption from Whakāri/White Island, New Zealand [PDF]
Abstract On 27 April 2016, White Island erupted in a multi-pulse, phreatic event that lasted for ~ 40 min. Six, variably sized pulses generated three ballistic ejections and at least one pyroclastic surge out of the inner crater and onto the main crater floor.

Coeruptive deformation helps to interpret physical processes associated with volcanic eruptions. Because phreatic eruptions cause small, localized coeruptive deformation, we sometimes fail to identify plausible deformation signals.

In 2018, a phreatic eruption occurred at Mt. Motoshirane, a pyroclastic cone group of the Kusatsu-Shirane Volcano in central Japan. The eruption was abrupt, and no signs of volcanic activity have been observed in recent years, in contrast to the other ...

Maars to calderas. End-members on a spectrum of explosive volcanic depressions [PDF]
We discuss maar-diatremes and calderas as end-members on a spectrum of negative volcanic landforms (depressions) produced by explosive eruptions (note—we focus on calderas formed during explosive eruptions, recognizing that some caldera types are not ...

Pyroclastic deposits and volcanic history of Mayor Island [PDF]
The emergent summit of Mayor Island, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand, is a peralkaline rhyolite volcano constructed by: a sequence of lava flows, the Tutaretare Rhyolite Formation new; and pyroclastic deposits, the Oira Pyroclastite Formition (new).

The sequence of the 2017–2018 eruptions and seismo-acoustic activity at Kirishima volcano group
Kirishima volcano consists of more than 20 eruptive centers. Among them, Shinmoe-dake had magmatic eruptions in October 2017 and March 2018. Subsequently, another active cone, Iwo-yama, had phreatic eruptions in April 2018.

Explosive activity of the summit cone of Piton de la Fournaise volcano (La Réunion island): A historical and geological review [PDF]
International audienceSummit explosive activity and collapses that form pit craters and calderas represent major volcanic hazards on a dominantly effusive, frequently active volcano like Piton de la Fournaise.
