본고의 목적은 식민통치시기에 시작된 일제의 체질인류학이 물려준 유산이 오늘날 한국 인류학에 남긴 과제의 한 측면을 검토하는 것이다. 현재 한국 체질인류학의 뿌리는 일제시기에 조선인을 대상으로 이루어진 체질인류학 연구 활동에서 찾을 수 있다. 본고에서는 이 연구업적들의 학문내적 특성을 비판적으로 검토함으로써 이것이 후대의 학문 발전에 부과한 한계를 극복하고 향후 한국 체질인류학의 발전을 도모할 방도를 모색하고자 한다.
