The heartbreak of depression: 'Psycho-cardiac' coupling in myocardial infarction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Ample evidence identifies strong links between major depressive disorder (MDD) and both risk of ischemic or coronary heart disease (CHD) and resultant morbidity and mortality. The molecular mechanistic bases of these linkages are poorly defined. Systemic

The Search for Invertebrate Consciousness [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
There is no agreement on whether any invertebrates are conscious and no agreement on a methodology that could settle the issue. How can the debate move forward?

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

The Impact of Core Stability Training on Neuromuscular Performance Among Young Soccer Players: A Randomized Interventional Trial

open access: yesApplied Sciences
(1) Soccer is the world’s most popular sport, with over 265 million players worldwide. The core muscles play a crucial role in supporting the body’s upper and lower limbs, and training to strengthen these muscles has been shown to improve athletic ...

Effects of Training and a Semester Break on Physical Fitness of Police Trainees [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of a physical training program and semester break periods on the chosen physical abilities and basic body composition indicators among police trainees. Body weight (BW), waist circumference (WC),

Mechanisms of IgE‐mediated food allergy and the role of allergen‐specific B cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Food allergy arises when allergen‐specific B cells preferentially produce immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies against harmless foods. This article explains the mechanisms driving IgE‐mediated reactions, highlights the central role of these B cells, and discusses how natural tolerance (NT) and oral immunotherapy (OIT) can reshape allergic immune responses.

Enhanced gait following NW-RSA training links to reduced myostatin and improved L-arginine metabolites in older women with preserved vitamin D

open access: yesScientific Reports
Thirty women (age = 68.9 ± 6.04 years), with preserved vitamin D status and sedentary lifestyle, participated in the study, the aim of which was to evaluate the effects of Nordic walking training with additional loading (NW-RSA), on gait quality, muscle ...

Bactericidal activity of human lactoferrin: influence of physical conditions and metabolic state of the target microorganism [PDF]

open access: yesInfection and Immunity, 1981
Lactoferrin is an iron-binding protein that is bactericidal against Streptococcus mutans and several other microorganisms. In this study, the influence of several physical conditions as well as the metabolic state of S. mutans on lactoferrin susceptibility were investigated.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.
