Increased Risk of Sarcomas in Children With Congenital Anomalies: Findings From the Genetic Overlap Between Anomalies and Cancer in Kids (GOBACK) Registry Linkage Study

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Pediatric sarcomas are a heterogeneous group of tumors that contribute disproportionately to cancer mortality in children. Although congenital anomalies are among the strongest known risk factors for childhood cancer, the risk of specific sarcoma subtypes among affected individuals has not yet been thoroughly evaluated. Procedure We

The distance, rotation, and physical parameters of ζ Pup [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2019
We scrutinize the Hipparcos parallax for the bright O supergiant zeta Pup, and confirm that the implied distance of 332+/-11pc appears to be reliable. We then review the implications for the star's physical parameters, and the consequences for the interpretation of P(phot), the 1.78-d photometric period. The equatorial rotation period is <3.7d (with

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Facilitators and barriers to social distancing for young people during the COVID-19 pandemic

open access: yesBMC Public Health, 2022
Background Social (or physical) distancing is an important transmission-prevention behaviour that has been endorsed to minimize COVID-19 transmission. This qualitative study explores the facilitators of and barriers to social distancing for young people ...

Residual tail twisting in ascidian larvae is stabilized by asymmetric myofibrils that resist bilateral symmetry restoration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...

The Impact of Physical Distancing on the Evacuation of Crowds

open access: yes, 2021
One of the key implications of COVID-19 is the adoption of physical distancing provisions to minimise the risk of virus transmission. Physical distancing can have significant consequences on crowd movement both in normal conditions and during emergencies.

Biophysical approaches for studying viral entry

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Viruses infect all living organisms and have been responsible for major epidemics and pandemics. Their ongoing evolutionary battle with host defenses creates a constant need for improved tools to study viral behavior. Advancing methods to probe viral attachment, fusion, and genome release deepen our understanding of how infections begin and support the

TRANSFORMATION OF THE PRIVATE/PUBLIC DIVIDE IN THE TIMES OF COVID-19: HOW ECONOMYDRIVEN POLICIES ARE RESHAPING THE CONCEPT OF SOCIAL/PHYSICAL DISTANCING IN SERBIA

open access: yesKöz-gazdaság, 2021
The evolution of social/physical distancing narratives throughout the COVID19 pandemic has left the concept itself ambiguous and vague while cutting through the borderlines between private and public.
