PHYSICAL AND BIOCHEMICAL STUDIES OF DORMANCY IN APPLE BUDS [PDF]
Membrane lipids and cellular water states were studied in endodormant and paradormant apple buds. Paradormancy was overcome by thidiazuron while endodormant buds were forced to break after a certain period of chilling. Nuclear magnetic resonance imaging was used to determine water states in buds of different stages of dormancy.

Physical Forces in Dormancy and Germination of Xanthium Seeds [PDF]
The germination of seeds of Xanthium pensylvanicum Wallr. occurs in 2 phases, an initial passive phase of water uptake followed by an active phase of growth. These 2 phases have been separated experimentally, and shown to occur similarly in isolated cotyledons and embryonic axes.

Intra-population level variation in thresholds for physical dormancy-breaking temperature. [PDF]
Intra-population variation in seed dormancy is an advantage for population persistence in unpredictable environments. The important role played by physically dormant species in these habitats makes understanding the level of variation in their dormancy a key ecological question.

Effect of physical and chemical treatments on breaking seed dormancy of datura (Datura stramonium L.) [PDF]
Datura is an important medicinal plant for production of various alkaloids. Seed dormancy and the problem of germination is the most important barrier to produce this plant. In order to solve the germination problem in this important medicinal plant, the

The genetics and physiology of seed dormancy, a crucial trait in common bean domestication
Background Physical seed dormancy is an important trait in legume domestication. Although seed dormancy is beneficial in wild ecosystems, it is generally considered to be an undesirable trait in crops due to reduction in yield and / or quality.

Physical dormancy in a changing climate
AbstractSpecies with physically dormant (PY) seeds make up over 25% of plant species in a number of ecologically important ecosystems around the globe, such as savannah and Mediterranean shrublands. Many of these ecosystems are subject to temporally stochastic events, such as fire and drought; but are in areas projected to experience some of the most ...

A proposed mechanism for physical dormancy break in seeds of Ipomoea lacunosa (Convolvulaceae) [PDF]
The water-impermeable seeds of Ipomoea lacunosa undergo sensitivity cycling to dormancy breaking treatment, and slits are formed around bulges adjacent to the micropyle during dormancy break, i.e. the water gap opens. The primary aim of this research was to identify the mechanism of slit formation in seeds of this species.Sensitive seeds were incubated

Polyaneuploid Cancer Cell Dormancy: Lessons From Evolutionary Phyla
Dormancy is a key survival strategy in many organisms across the tree of life. Organisms that utilize some type of dormancy (hibernation, aestivation, brumation, diapause, and quiescence) are able to survive in habitats that would otherwise be ...

The Effect of Different Dormancy Breaking Treatments on Germination of Sophora Seeds (Sophora alopecuroides L.) [PDF]
The legume family has seed dormancy, which is an evolutionary adaptation that prevents seed germination in adverse ecological conditions and it is very important in preserving plant species.
