Carnitine and Physical Exercise
Sports Medicine, 1996Carnitine plays a central role in fatty acid (FA) metabolism. It transports long-chain fatty acids into mitochondria for beta-oxidation. Carnitine also modulates the metabolism of coenzyme-A (CoA). It is not surprising that the use of supplementary carnitine to improve physical performance has become widespread in recent years, although there is no ...

Premenstrual Syndrome and Physical Exercise
Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica, 1971The relationship between premenstrual syndrome and physical exercise was studied with the aid of questionnaires in a series of 748 female university students. Girls who practised sports showed less symptoms of central nervous tension, particularly headache. Menstrual dys‐mennrrhoea also was less frequent in the athletes than in the control group.

Physical Exercise and Transplantation
2012The Global Observatory on Donation and Transplantation (a division of the World Health Organization, WHO) in 2009 reported that an estimated 104,650 transplants were performed in 89 countries (72,100 kidney, 21,175 liver, 5405 heart, 3650 lung, 2320 pancreas). This number represents an increase of 4% since 2008 but less than 10% of the global need.

Cancer, Physical Activity, and Exercise
Comprehensive Physiology, 2012AbstractThis review examines the relationship between physical activity and cancer along the cancer continuum, and serves as a synthesis of systematic and meta‐analytic reviews conducted to date. There exists a large body of epidemiologic evidence that conclude those who participate in higher levels of physical activity have a reduced likelihood of ...

Mounting evidence from animal and human studies has shown that long-term physical exercise elicits beneficial effects on cognition, which is likely to be partly mediated by increased adult neurogenesis in the hippocampus. Animal studies have revealed that the intensity, type, and duration of exercise training, as well as the animal strain, species age,

Physical Activity and Exercise
2020Decades of research have reported that physical activity and exercise training can help improve and maintain cognitive health across the human lifespan. While the first wave of studies in this field was dominated by the positive effect of aerobic training programs, more recent evidence supports the notion that a variety of exercise interventions, from ...

Physical exercise and conferences
Möbius: A Journal for Continuing Education Professionals in Health Sciences, 1986Conference planners often overlook the physical needs of conferees. They pay attention to the social and the learning needs of adults and then wonder why conferees appear groggy and lethargic by mid-afternoon. This article discusses a pilot study in which 82 conferees participated in an experiment to examine the effects of an exercise break ...

Physical activity and exercise
2004This chapter provides scientifically derived information on the proper exercise regimen for the middle-aged woman. Much research is published about the effects of exercise in older and younger women, but less information is available for middle-aged women.
