Serum Myonectin Levels Are Positively Associated With Physical Function and Lower Frailty‐Related Limitation in Maintenance Hemodialysis Patients: A Cross‐Sectional Study

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients frequently suffer from frailty, characterized by reduced physical function and poor prognosis. Myokines, such as myonectin, secreted by muscle, are emerging regulators of systemic health. This study investigated the relationship between serum myonectin, adipokines (adiponectin, omentin), and ...

Enteropathogenic E. coli shows delayed attachment and host response in human jejunum organoid‐derived monolayers compared to HeLa cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) infects the human intestinal epithelium, resulting in severe illness and diarrhoea. In this study, we compared the infection of cancer‐derived cell lines with human organoid‐derived models of the small intestine. We observed a delayed in attachment, inflammation and cell death on primary cells, indicating that host ...

The Physics of the Vicsek model [PDF]

open access: yesThe European Physical Journal Special Topics, 2016
In these lecture notes, prepared for the Microswimmers Summer School 2015 at Forschungszentrum Juelich, I discuss the well known Vicsek model for collective motion and its main properties. In particular, I discuss its algorithmical implementation and the basic properties of its universality class. I present results from numerical simulations and insist

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

Marker Method in Studying the Defect Structure in Products of the Oxidation of Highly Disordered Substrates

open access: yesHigh Temperature Materials and Processes, 2016
The interpretation of marker experiments in studying the formation mechanism and defect structure of higher oxides during oxidation of lower oxides, showing rather high deviations from stoichiometry, has been discussed.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Nitrogen versus phosphorus export in the Bay of Quinte, Ontario, Canada: Is the role of nitrogen fate and transport being overlooked in agricultural watersheds?

open access: yesJournal of Hydrology: Regional Studies
Study region: Two small agricultural watersheds — the Napanee River and Wilton Creek watersheds — are located in one of the most degraded sites in the Great Lakes basin: Bay of Quinte in northeastern Lake Ontario.

The Influence of Yttrium on High Temperature Oxidation of Valve Steels

open access: yesHigh Temperature Materials and Processes, 2015
The influence of small amounts of yttrium, electrochemically deposited on the surface of four steels utilized in the production of valves in car engines, on the protective properties of the oxide scale and its adherence to the surface of the oxidized ...

Physical Modelling Of The Steel Flow In RH Apparatus

open access: yesArchives of Metallurgy and Materials, 2015
The efficiency of vacuum steel degassing using RH methods depends on many factors. One of the most important are hydrodynamic processes occurring in the ladle and vacuum chamber. It is always hard and expensive to determine the flow character and the way
