Morphological characteristics of phytoliths from representative conifers in China

Palaeoworld, 2016
Abstract Coniferous phytoliths in sediments are an effective tool for detecting the historical appearance of conifers. However, at the timberline in mountainous areas, such coniferous phytoliths are easily confused with grass phytoliths. This study analyses modern phytoliths from 17 conifer plants. Six common types and six rare types were identified.

Study of morphology and chemical composition of phytoliths on the surface of paddy straw

Paddy and Water Environment, 2014
Silica though nutritionally insignificant plays important role in plants. Most of the silica from absorbed water is precipitated and deposited inside or between plant cells to form ‘phytoliths’ which provide mechanical strength and aid in protection from physical, chemical and biological stresses of the plant.

Morphological trend analysis of rice phytolith during the early Neolithic in the Lower Yangtze

Journal of Archaeological Science, 2014
Abstract The investigation of rice domestication process is important for understanding how agriculture evolved in China. In this paper, we studied samples of rice phytoliths from the Shangshan (around c. 11,000–9000 cal. BP), Kuahuqiao (around c. 8200–7200 cal. BP) and Hemudu (around c. 7000–6500 cal. BP) periods in the lower valley of Yangtze River.

Morphological variation of phytoliths according to leaf senescence and position in the organs of Brachiaria decumbens

Flora, 2019
Abstract Phytoliths are biomineralizations of amorphous silica, formed through root absorption of silicic acid from the soil solution. These particles increase plant protection against biotic and abiotic stresses. The morphology of the phytoliths and their position in Brachiaria decumbens was characterized and described. Samples of root, stem, leaves

Morphological characteristics and environmental implications of phytoliths in topsoils from different vegetation zones on northern slope of Changbai Mountains, China

Chinese Geographical Science, 2010
The Changbai Mountains, located in the temperate monsoon climate zone of East Asia, is an ideal location for the research on timberline response to global changes. In this study, the topsoils were collected from different vertical vegetation zones on the northern slope of the Changbai Mountains, Northeast China in August 2009, and phytoliths in the ...

A Comparison and Differentiation of Phytoliths from Maize and Wild Grasses: Use of Morphological Criteria

American Antiquity, 1984
Phytolith analysis in archaeology suffers from a lack of taxonomic data on silicified forms in plant domesticates and related wild species. This study presents the results of a comparative analysis of phytolith size and morphology in maize (Zea mays L.) and wild grasses. Grass phytolith morphology is highly diverse.

Morphology and composition of calcium oxalate monohydrate phytoliths in the bark of Betula ermanii (stone birch): Case study from Sakhalin Island

Microscopy Research and Technique
AbstractThe morphology of calcium oxalate monohydrate precipitates (COM, Ca(C2O4)·H2O, P21/c, whewellite) occurring as crystals or intergrowths, as well as distribution of crystal‐bearing idioblasts, have been studied for the first time in the bark of stone birch Betula ermanii from Sakhalin Island sampled in an area affected by mud volcanism and an ...

Assessing the feasibility of identifying maize through the analysis of cross-shaped size and three-dimensional morphology of phytoliths in the grasslands of southeastern South America

Journal of Archaeological Science, 2003
This paper tests the feasibility of applying a technique developed by Piperno and Pearsall (Am. Antiquity 49 (1984) 361; Phytolith Analysis: An Archaelolgical and Geological Perspective, 1988, Academic Press: San Diego; Paleoethnobotany, 2000, Academic Press: San Diego) based on size and three-dimensional morphology criteria of cross-shaped phytoliths ...
