ABSTRACT Evolutionary transitions to carnivory represent profound shifts in feeding mode that are often accompanied by widespread changes in organismal function, behaviour and ecology. Such transitions have evolved numerous times among animals, and predator–prey interactions have been major drivers of animal evolution.

The larval food consumption, growth, and pectinase activity without symbiotic bacteria are suppressed in Zeugodacus cucurbitae. We isolated four strains of Klebsiella spp. that can participate in pectinolytic metabolism from feeding wounds. Reintroducing them to sterile eggs breaks the developmental constraints caused by the lack of symbiotic bacteria.

We investigated the molecular basis of host switching by the phytophagous West Indian fruit fly (A. obliqua). Third‐instar larvae showed differential gene expression according to host plants: red mombin, mango, and carambola. The main gene categories differentially expressed were digestion, detoxification, and gene regulators.

Dicyphus hesperus, a zoophytophagous predator, effectively controls Bemisia tabaci in tomato greenhouses. Highly zoophagous lines rapidly reduced whitefly populations without causing significant damage to tomatoes, whereas lowly zoophagous lines were equally efficient over time but caused more damage.

Sensitivity analysis, molecular systematics and natural history evolution of Scathophagidae (Diptera: Cyclorrhapha: Calyptratae) [PDF]
The 60 000 described species of Cyclorrhapha are characterized by an unusual diversity in larval life-history traits, which range from saprophagy over phytophagy to parasitism and predation.

Habitat-conditioned feeding behaviour in Barbitistes constrictus (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae)
Some insect herbivores can regulate their nourishment intake by different feeding behaviour. This mechanism allows them to persist with utilising different food resources according to the composition of the vegetation within their habitats.

Bacterial symbionts in arthropods are common, vary in their effects, and can dramatically influence the outcome of biological control efforts. Macrolophus pygmaeus (Heteroptera: Miridae), a key component of biological control programs, is mainly ...

The effect of plant feeding on biological aspects of Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) was evaluated. Nymphs and adults of this predator were fed with Tenebrio molitor L. (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) pupae on Eucalyptus urophylla plants in the field or only with pupae of this prey in the laboratory.
