Depositional processes of varved sediments from proglacial Lago Frías since 1800 CE (North Patagonian Andes, Argentina)

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
The glacierized Valle Frías in Northern Patagonia is one of the best‐studied valleys in South America and includes varved sediments from Lago Frías. We complement this lacustrine record with a high‐resolution documentation of varve counts and their composition.

Hindcasting cyanobacterial communities in Lake Okaro with germination experiments and genetic analyses [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Cyanobacterial blooms are becoming increasingly prevalent worldwide. Sparse historic phytoplankton records often result in uncertainty as to whether bloom-forming species have always been present and are proliferating in response to eutrophication or ...

Mesoscale Oceanographic Processes Drive the Seasonal Abundance of the Seabob Shrimp Xiphopenaeus spp. on the Eastern Brazilian Shelf

open access: yesFisheries Oceanography, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The seabob shrimp (Xiphopenaeus spp.) is a primary fishery resource in Brazil, with considerable economic and social importance along the coast. While environmental drivers of its life cycle are well‐documented for southeastern and southern populations, the factors modulating populations in the Eastern Brazilian Shelf remain poorly understood,

A strong summer phytoplankton bloom southeast of Vietnam in 2007, a transitional year from El Niño to La Niña.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
Summer upwelling occurs frequently off the southeast Vietnam coast in the western South China Sea (SCS), where summer phytoplankton blooms generally appear during June-August.

Satellite Ocean Color Based Harmful Algal Bloom Indicators for Aquaculture Decision Support in the Southern Benguela

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2020
The aquaculture industry of southern Africa faces environmental threats from harmful algal blooms (HABs), which have the potential to cause devastating economic losses (Pitcher et al., 2019).

Host-specificity and dynamics in bacterial communities associated with Bloom-forming freshwater phytoplankton. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
Many freshwater phytoplankton species have the potential to form transient nuisance blooms that affect water quality and other aquatic biota. Heterotrophic bacteria can influence such blooms via nutrient regeneration but also via antagonism and other ...

Contrasting Food Web Dynamics Across Oceanographic Boundaries in Subarctic Pelagic Ecosystems

open access: yesFisheries Oceanography, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Understanding the structure of pelagic food webs across multiple trophic levels is critical for elucidating species interactions, energy flow, and anthropogenic impacts on production. This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the eastern North Pacific pelagic food webs, focusing on the Gulf of Alaska (GoA) during late winter of 2019.

Larval Arctic cod (Boreogadus saida) exhibit stronger developmental and physiological responses to temperature than to elevated pCO2

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract High‐latitude ecosystems are simultaneously warming and acidifying under ongoing climate change. Arctic cod (Boreogadus saida) are a key species in the Arctic Ocean and have demonstrated sensitivity to ocean warming and acidification as adults and embryos, but their larval sensitivity to the combined stressors is unknown. In a laboratory multi‐

Recurring patterns in bacterioplankton dynamics during coastal spring algae blooms

open access: yeseLife, 2016
A process of global importance in carbon cycling is the remineralization of algae biomass by heterotrophic bacteria, most notably during massive marine algae blooms.

Adaptation to extreme environments: A review of Antarctic fish physiology

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Having evolved in the chronically cold and thermally stable waters of the Southern Ocean (SO) for millions of years, Antarctic fish possess a suite of physiological specializations that enable them to survive at temperatures near the freezing point of seawater. Adaptations include the evolution of antifreeze proteins, modifications of membrane
