Use of metalaxyl against some soil plant pathogens of the class Peronosporomycetes - A review and two case studies

open access: yesPlant Protection Science, 2022
Upon its discovery and implementation in plant protection, metalaxyl became one of the most important fungicides against Phytophthora infestans, but its efficiency has also been proven against other soil pathogens of the class Peronosporomycetes.

Response of Elite Dry Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) Genotypes to Fusarium oxysporum and Rhizoctonia solani Root Rot

open access: yesPlant Pathology, Volume 74, Issue 9, Page 2682-2696, December 2025.
Root rot is a major yield‐limiting disease of dry bean. This study was conducted to evaluate field resistance to root rot. Multiple lines with improved levels of resistance were identified for future root rot resistance breeding efforts. ABSTRACT Root rot is a major yield‐limiting disease of dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) production in the United States

Pythium and Phytopythium Species in Two Pennsylvania Greenhouse Irrigation Water Tanks [PDF]

open access: yesPlant Disease, 2016
Two commercial greenhouses producing potted plants in Pennsylvania using recycled irrigation water in an ebb-and-flood system have incurred significant crop losses due to Pythium aphanidermatum. In cooperation with the greenhouses, one or more of their water tanks was monitored continuously (128 tank samplings) for Pythium spp. by baiting.

How safe are peat‐free growing media? An exploration of plant pathogen risks to the horticultural industry and recommendations for risk mitigation

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 7, Issue 6, Page 1684-1699, November 2025.
The UK's horticultural industry is shifting from reliance on unsustainable peat‐based growing media to products that contain alternative constituents, including coir, bark, wood fibre and composted green waste. Some peat‐alternatives carry an elevated risk of harbouring plant pathogens, including the potential to introduce novel pathogens from overseas,

Fatty acid profiles of oomycetes (Halophytophthora and Phytopythium spp.) from Philippines mangroves

open access: yesLetters in Applied Microbiology, 2023
Abstract Mangroves create an ecological environment for a diverse assemblage of organisms, including marine and mangrove oomycetes. Halophytophthora spp., in particular, are isolated from fallen senescent mangrove leaves. Studies reported on Philippines oomycetes are mostly on their distribution and taxonomy, while fatty acid studies ...

ParAquaSeq, a Database of Ecologically Annotated rRNA Sequences Covering Zoosporic Parasites Infecting Aquatic Primary Producers in Natural and Industrial Systems

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, Volume 25, Issue 6, August 2025.
ABSTRACT Amplicon sequencing tools such as metabarcoding are commonly used for thorough characterisation of microbial diversity in natural samples. They mostly rely on the amplification of conserved universal markers, mainly ribosomal genes, allowing the taxonomic assignment of barcodes.

In Vitro Evaluation of Wood Vinegar (Pyroligneous Acid) VOCs Inhibitory Effect against a Fungus-like Microorganism Ovatisporangium (Phytopythium) Isolate Recovered from Tomato Fields in Iran

open access: yesAgronomy, 2022
Crop diseases and agricultural pests and pathogens are causing huge economic losses. The actual means for dealing with them involve the use of damaging chemical pesticides that harm the environment, threaten biodiversity, and undermine human health. This

Sample volume affects the number of Phytophthora and Phytopythium species detected by soil baiting

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Plant Pathology, 2023
AbstractMore Phytophthora species are detected from environmental samples through DNA metabarcoding than are isolated by baiting. We investigated whether bulking soil samples and baiting ~ 300 g samples in standard 1 L tubs resulted in the isolation of fewer Phytophthora and Phytophythium species compared with using 15 – 20 g samples of non-bulked soil

Application of Real-Time PCR for the Detection and Quantification of Oomycetes in Ornamental Nursery Stock

open access: yesJournal of Fungi, 2021
Numerous Phytophthora and Pythium disease outbreaks have occurred in Europe following inadvertent introduction of contaminated ornamental plants. Detection and identification of pathogens are crucial to reduce risks and improve plant biosecurity in ...
