Rearing and mass production of the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis
Entomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, 1985AbstractA method for mass rearing Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias‐Henriot is proposed. This predacious mite is maintained in rearing units composed of cylinders which contain leaves heavily infested with Tetranychus urticae Koch. The bottom of the cylinders is made of gauze. Fresh cylinders with prey are placed at regular intervals on tops of older ones

Distribution patterns of Phytoseiulus persimilis in response to climate change
Pest Management ScienceAbstractBackgroundThe biological control agent Phytoseiulus persimilis is a commercialized specialist predator of two agricultural pest mite species Tetranychus urticae and Tetranychus evansi. Biocontrol of these pest species by P. persimilis has achieved success in biological control in some areas.

Ultrastructure of chemoreceptors on the pedipalps and first tarsi ofPhytoseiulus persimilis
Experimental & Applied Acarology, 1985The ultrastructure of pedipalpal and tarsal setae ofPhytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot has been investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The setae on top of the tarsi of the pedipalps are innervated by either 11–12 dendrites or 4–8 dendrites.

Species at the same trophic level may interact through competition for food, but can also interact through intraguild predation. Intraguild predation is widespread at the second and third trophic level and the effects may cascade down to the plant level.

The lower and upper thermal activity thresholds of the predatory mite Phytoseiulus macropilis Banks (Acari: Phytoseiidae) were compared with those of its prey Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) and one of the alternative commercially available control agents for T. urticae, Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot. Adult female P. macropilis

Determination of intraguild interactions between entomopathogens and predators is important when attempting to use a combination of these two natural enemy groups for biological control of their shared arthropod pest species. This study assessed the effects of Beauveria bassiana on the predation and associated behavior of the predatory mite ...

Morpho-functional changes in the alimentary canal epithelium and the process of food digestion are studied in mites. The changes in the epithelial cells of the midgut are shown to come very rapidly. Each 10-15 min. digestive cells degenerate. They are replaced by non-differentiated cells.

The structure of the digestive and- excretory systems in Phytoseiulus persimilis is described. It is established that the digestive system in Ph. persimilis is similar on the whole to the digestive system of other gamasid mites, though there are also some morphofunctional differences (no folding in the intestine and diverticula, etc.).

Control of Two-spotted Spider Mite by Phytoseiulus persimilis
Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology, 2001Abstract Two-spotted spider mites, Tetranychus urticae Koch have been a problem for many years. A broad approach to population management is needed. – Hybridization between greenhouse strains of T. urticae and introduced strains may result in a strain with different life-history traits.
