tA Single Amino Acid Difference Distinguishes Resistant and Susceptible Alleles of the Rice Blast Resistance Gene Pi-ta [PDF]
The rice blast resistance (R) gene Pi-ta mediates gene-for-gene resistance against strains of the fungus Magnaporthe grisea that express avirulent alleles of AVR-Pita. Using a map-based cloning strategy, we cloned Pi-ta, which is linked to the centromere of chromosome 12.

Gain of Virulence Caused by Insertion of a Pot3 Transposon in a Magnaporthe grisea Avirulence Gene
The avirulence gene AVR-Pita in Magnaporthe grisea prevents the fungus from infecting rice cultivars carrying the disease resistance gene Pi-ta. Insertion of Pot3 transposon into the promoter of AVR-Pita caused the gain of virulence toward Yashiro-mochi,

Fitness benefit plays a vital role in the retention of the Pi-ta susceptible alleles
In plants, large numbers of R genes, which segregate as loci with alternative alleles conferring different resistance to pathogens, have been maintained over a long evolutionary time.

Induction of avirulence by AVR-Pita1 in virulent U.S. field isolates of Magnaporthe oryzae
The AVR-Pita1 gene, from the Chinese isolate O-137 of Magnaporthe oryzae, is an effector that determines the efficacy of the Pi-ta rice blast resistance gene.

Development of blast-resistant rice varieties based on application of DNA technologies
Diseases of agricultural crops are the main reason for decreased yield and quality of product. Blast (causative agent: Pyricularia oryzae Cav.) is the most harmful disease on rice fields. Economic damage caused by the pathogen is significant in all areas
