Pickup Ions in the Heliosphere

open access: yes, 2018
Particles that have been ionized from neutrals in the interplanetary space within the heliosphere are called PickUp Ions (PUIs). The freshly created ions are injected into the solar wind plasma with a characteristic Velocity Distribution Function (VDF) and carried outwards jointly with the solar wind and its embedded Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF).

Lunar Neutral Exposphere Properties from Pickup Ion Analysis [PDF]

open access: yes
Composition and structure of neutral constituents in the lunar exosphere can be determined through measurements of phase space distributions of pickup ions borne from the exosphere [1].

Spectral Evolution of Pickup Ions across Interplanetary Shocks in the Outer Heliosphere: Observational Constraints and Transport Simulations

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters
Pickup ions (PUIs) often experience acceleration and heating as they traverse interplanetary shocks, leading to the formation of a distinct suprathermal tail in their energy spectra downstream of the shock.

Pickup Ion Production and Turbulence in the Global Heliosphere

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The outer heliosphere model in the Space Weather Modeling Framework describes the dynamics of the thermal solar wind, pickup ions, electrons, and neutrals. We have extended this model with turbulence transport and a kinetic description of the pickup ions

Solar Orbiter’s Passage through Comet Leonard’s Tail while in the He+ Focusing Cone

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The Solar Orbiter spacecraft crossed Comet Leonard’s ion tail on 2021 December 17 near 1 au. In and near the ion tail, significant amounts of singly charged oxygen (O ^+ ) ions were detected by the Heavy Ion Sensor on board the spacecraft. These ions are

Interstellar Pickup Ion Observations to 60 au

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Abstract Prior to the Solar Wind Around Pluto (SWAP) observations from New Horizons, the only significant interstellar pickup ion (PUI) observations were taken inside 5.4 au from the Ulysses and 1 au missions. Here, we analyze SWAP data to provide the first comprehensive radial profile of interstellar PUIs in the outer heliosphere from ...
