Structural studies and functional engineering of NanX: an anhydro‐sialic acid transporter from Escherichia coli

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Biophysical characterisation shows that NanX, a membrane transport protein from the major facilitator superfamily (MFS), forms both monomers and dimers after purification. AlphaFold modelling and substrate docking provide information on residues likely involved in substrate recognition for NanX and another MFS member, NanT.

The Role of Executive Function in the Semantic Comprehension Deficits of Stroke Aphasia and Semantic Dementia

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2015
Introduction Semantic memory is crucial for understanding and interacting with the world. Contrasting patterns of semantic deficits have been claimed for semantic dementia (SD) patients and comprehension-impaired stroke (SA) patients, leading to the ...

Empowering Adult Learning How AI Fuels Progress Across Disciplines and Professions

open access: yesNew Directions for Adult and Continuing Education, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This article examines the evolving role of artificial intelligence (AI) as a transformative cognitive partner across educational and professional fields. It explores how AI shifts attention away from routine technical tasks and toward human‐centered skills such as critical thinking, ethical decision‐making, and professional judgment.

Agent-Patient Similarity Affects Sentence Structure in Language Production: Evidence from Subject Omissions in Mandarin

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2014
Interference effects from semantically similar items are well-known in studies of single word production, where the presence of semantically similar distractor words slows picture naming.

Sex Representation in US Stroke Clinical Trials: A Decade of Trends and Challenges

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Stroke remains a major cause of disability and mortality in the US, with significant sex‐based disparities, and females remain underrepresented in stroke clinical trials. We aimed to examine sex representation in US‐based stroke clinical trials, identify trial characteristics associated with higher female enrollment (≥ 50%), and ...

Vocabulary size and structure affects real-time lexical recognition in 18-month-olds.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2019
The mature lexicon encodes semantic relations between words, and these connections can alternately facilitate and interfere with language processing. We explore the emergence of these processing dynamics in 18-month-olds (N = 79) using a novel approach ...

Semantic domain and grammatical class effects in the picture–word interference paradigm [PDF]

open access: yesLanguage, Cognition and Neuroscience, 2013
The role of grammatical class in lexical access and representation is still not well understood. Grammatical effects obtained in picture-word interference experiments have been argued to show the operation of grammatical constraints during lexicalization when syntactic integration is required by the task.

Elevated Connectivity During Language Processing Is Associated With Cognitive Performance in SeLECTS

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Self‐Limited Epilepsy with Centrotemporal Spikes (SeLECTS) is associated with language impairments despite seizures originating in the motor cortex, suggesting aberrant cross‐network interactions. Here we tested whether functional connectivity in SeLECTS during language tasks predicts language performance.

Spatio-temporal dynamics of word selection in speech production: Insights from electrocorticography

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2015
Background Word selection refers to the act of choosing words as we speak. Different regions of the left lateral and medial prefrontal cortex (PFC), and left temporal cortex (LTC) are associated with word selection (Price, 2012) but their role and how ...

The Effect of Semantic Context on Lexical Access in Children With and Without Developmental Language Disorder [PDF]

open access: yesIranian Rehabilitation Journal, 2023
Objectives: Lexical access problems are one of the limitations observed in children with developmental language disorders during the initial years of schooling. Semantic context has a powerful influence on lexical access.
